Multiplayer elimination player skipping step priority

Post by Freemind »

Hello,

I have played many multiplayer elimination tournaments (mainly schroedingers cat) and there is a very bad pattern occuring in which players are getting skipped for games (i.e. who dont have to play in one step but just get directly qualified to the next).

Here is an example tournament, but I have seen this pattern occuring in many others:

Notice that the players getting skipped is always the player with the second place position. I've seen the same thing in other tournaments too where the last placed player, who still qualifies to the next round, is the palyer getting skipped.
Clearly this is not a good practise, since it is up for abuse. If it isn't done randomly it should be the first placed players who get skipped.

I would guess that this behaviour is somewhat of a legacy from the swiss/point style tournaments, where skipping the player who is last makes sense since that is where it will affect the result of the tournament the least, but for Multiplayer Elimination, it is not good at all.

My suggestions, one of the following
a) Make it so first placed players are the ones getting skipped.
b) Make it random who gets skipped.
c) Make a) or b) an option when you create a tournament.
I'd guess a) or b) are the easiest to implement, but clearly "options for the creator" is awesome.
