Bake Action Inquiry

Post by Onyx Storm »

Hi folks...
This could be an issue of me playing the game incorrectly for the past decade... but I thought I would bring it up.

If I buy a Fireplace or Cooking Implement (that has a bake symbol) ....My gaming group treats that as a "Bake Action".
The boardgamearena interface WILL pop up and give you a free bake action for THAT specific Fireplace.... but you are not allowed to select any other Cooking implement instead... such as a Clay Oven that you may have already purchased in your inventory. So you are required to Bake your Bread in the new Fireplace even though you have a Clay Oven.

Is this working as intended?

THanks for the insights lads.

None of this sounds accurate to me, including how the BGA interface works.

You only get a bake bread action when you take it on the "Grain Utilization" action space, or when a card effect tells you you get one. Both the Clay Oven and the Stone Oven give you a a bake bread action.

During a bake bread action you are allowed to convert grain in whatever improvements you like according to what they say. So even if you get a bake bread action by purchasing the stone oven, you can bake bread in a fireplace, or a cooking hearth, or whatever else on your farm already along with the Stone Oven.

You do NOT get a bake bread action for purchasing a Fireplace or a Cooking Hearth. These cards allow you to bake bread in them, but they do NOT say nor give a bake bread action on their own.

Hopefully that clears things up on how it is intended to work.

Rainor,
1st off, thanks for the discussion.
I cracked open my hard copy of Agricola and looked at the Fireplace card and the Clay Oven card. Both cards have a yellow bake icon in the bottom right of the card. (maybe I have an older version). The way we play in the hard copy version of the game, is that if you buy a Fireplace (with the bake bread icon in the lower right of the card), you immediately get a bake bread action that can be used on the newly purchased Fireplace and/or with any previously purchased Stone/Clay Ovens.

I just finished a game of BGA where I had a Clay Oven and 4 grain.... but no way to "Bake Bread" on the board due to placements... so I bought a Fireplace (3 clay).... and was immediately given the ability to process/bake goods via the Fireplace ONLY.... no offerings of conversion charts for the Clay Oven.

Maybe I am not being clear.... does this process make sense or is it truly a "Bake Action for the Fire Place Alone"

Thanks again for your detailed response. I believe that from your response, BGA (and perhaps everywhere else as well) does not confer a Bake Bread Action via the purchase of Fireplace, that you would see if you bought a Clay Oven.

If that is the case, I can assure you that in my last game on BGA, I bought a Fireplace and BGA immediately provided me with a Conversion chart that would allow me to bake bread in the newly purchased Fireplace only (not previously purchased Clay Oven)

do have a table number/link to the game?
You should not be getting actions to bake when buying a fireplace.

The icons just means you can use these cards during a bake bread action, not that it's giving you one

The Fireplace allows you to convert vegetables, sheep, wild boar and cattle into food, at any time during your turn. It can only convert grain into food when you get a bake action.
So what you are experiencing seems correct. You were offered the ability to convert to food - but not to bake grain into food. Not via the fireplace and not via the clay oven.

I assume that you remember this incorrectly, and that the conversion chart did in fact not show the ability to convert 1 grain into 2 food. It will have shown 1 grain into 1 food though, as this is something you can always do. This also corresponds well with the fact that you weren't shown the ability to use the clay oven.

The others have done a good job answering the rest of your questions, but just to be super clear on this part: You are playing incorrectly.

When you purchase a fireplace, you do NOT get a bake bread action. The Clay Oven and Stone Oven do, they explicitly say as such on the card ("When you build it, you can bake immediately"). The Fireplace and Cooking Hearth do not say this, and they do not give a bake bread action. (You can clarify that in the rulebook of either edition, there is no bake bread action from building fireplaces/hearths).
