BGA stats on popular games

Post by villager »

Is there a report out there that shows which games are being played by the community?

There's a "most popular games" list at https://boardgamearena.com/gamelist but its not clear what stat was used.

Would love to see a report that shows the top 20 games played last week / month / quarter / year.

If you go to https://boardgamearena.com/gameinprogress and scroll to the bottom you can see the games being currently played. That's usually a pretty good idea of what's popular.

This definitely isn't a perfect view of the most popular games. Stop-It has been insanely popular since its release last week. But the games are very quick so the "games in progress" doesn't capture its popularity.

very true.. wonder if BGA admins could expose the "completed games" report rather than the in-progress games report.

Spot-it games can be very short, so even if there is more game played than an other, there will be less "in progress" games at the same time than other longer games.

I meant Spot-It of course. Stop-It was an amusing "Freudian slip". :-)

I wouldn't want total games to replace current number of games as a metric of a game's popularity, because that puts a bias on older games. A game that has just fair to middling popularity would outstrip a game of tremendous popularity if it has been on BGA 10 times as long... For example, "Through the Ages" I recall being in the top spot for the first year or so I've been playing on the site, but I don't think it's even in the top ten now...

absolutely.. my wish was for a separate report. The current implementation for "popular games" can remain.

But to your point, the Popular Games list could be based on "completed games" in the last week / 2 weeks / month..?
