Skipping vs. kicking out

Post by LongJR97 »

Does skipping the turn of players out of time kick them out of the game?

I started a timed (one move per day) game, open to anyone, and a newbie player joined. After four days of thinking time (thanks to the 2x bonus), s/he is finally out of time. But I don't see the option to kick them out, just to skip them. Or is that the same thing? If not, how do I kick them out? I don't want to skip them just to have to wait another four days every single time it comes back around to them.

I've searched all over the forum and I can't find anything on this topic. The wording of the FAQ makes it sound like there should be a very obvious KICK THIS PERSON OUT button, but I don't see one. Just "Skip turn of players out of time."

Sorry if I'm missing something obvious here. Thanks.

With real-time games, it's kind-of halfway between the two: they get kicked, but can effectively rejoin. But once someone is skipped the Elo calculation is fixed (and if the game is about 0% complete then there will essentially be no Elo transfer) and many games don't play properly anyway, so you might as well skip them and then quit.

When a player is skipped, they become a zombie player. For properly implemented zombie player code, this means that when it becomes their turn, they will do an action (or even nothing) that does not impact the game. I am fairly certain that their thinking time does not increase when this action/non-action is taken.
What this effectively means is that once a player is skipped, they are out of the game. While there used to be a way to rejoin games where a player had been skipped, I don't think it effectively does anything. There may be a situation in simultaneous play games (where everyone must choose a card to play, etc.) where they could gain thinking time back, but I am not sure about that.

tl;dr Once you skip a player, you don't need to worry about them coming back and delaying the game further.
