Rules about herd of mammoths

I've played about 50+ games with mammoths, and thought, who get biggest sum in dices - winner.

But today, i was shocked, then my opponent twice for the one game, took my first prize.

He rolled the dice "5", my dices "4+4". He winner!
He rolled the dice "5+2", my dices "4+4+2+1". He winner.

Is it always was these rules? I can believe it.
