Mutual friends dropping?

This has happened twice this week. I see my friend count go down by one. It’s hard to figure out who is gone. Another one drops. Today I go to play a game with my friend and they aren’t on my list. (And this person is a friend in real life of 20+ years.) Aha! That’s the missing person. They refriend me. We get our game in. Same day the other friend who dropped off somehow adds me back. Neither dropped me. Can anyone explain please?
