BGA has an enormous catalog of games now, and while this can be beneficial in a lot of ways, it also has a drawback: it spreads the player pool thin. This is already a big issue; just now, I tried to play a game of Murus Gallicus - a criminally underrated game - and had to wait twenty minutes to find a single opponent. I counted myself lucky it wasn't any longer! Murus Gallicus is hardly the only example. There are dozens of great games just sitting around gathering dust with no one playing them.
Luckily, there are franchises that BGA can draw inspiration from, like Supercell. Their games have multitudes of different stages and variations, helping their games stay fresh. But if they allowed players to play on whatever stages or modes they wanted, the player pool would be spread too thin, causing long waiting queues. Instead, they only allow a few stages and modes to be played at a time. League of Legends does something similar in that they lock 90% of their available champions, allowing only a dozen or so to be playable at a time for free.
I don't think BGA would benefit from blocking off so many games at a time. Instead, perhaps a spotlight system? BGA could put something somewhere on the homepage highlighting ten or so rarely played games. If that isn't enough to get people playing them, perhaps some achievements as an added incentive?
I think this would be healthy for BGA in general. Any online gaming platform would want loyal, repeat players, and players are more likely to become repeat players when they find games that really click with them. The best way to facilitate that is to encourage them to try more games. My rotating spotlight idea does exactly that.
