Yaniv is now in beta!

Post by ufm »

Yaniv, known as a backpacker's card game, is now in beta!
The game supports plenty of variant rules, so please jump in and play: https://boardgamearena.com/gamepanel?game=yaniv

P.S. Since the most common rule is too slow to be played online, the default setting has been changed during alpha.
The default options are elimination limit 51, Yaniv call limit 15, and score reduction at exact 50.
If you want a longer game (or even a shorter game) please change the options as you see fit.

I didn't know this game before and found that there are many variations played in the wild world ;-)

So to clarify the rules on BGA, I have these questions:
- What are the point values of the cards? I found this in the internet: "Each ace is worth 1; cards 2-10 are worth their face value; pictures (J, Q, K) are worth 10 and jokers are worth zero." But others play with different point values.
- "In sequences aces are always low: A-2-3 is a valid sequence, but Q-K-A is not." Is this also true on BGA?
- Can you select freely the set you play, or does it have to match to the last set played?

I have edited the german short rules in BGA wiki https://de.doc.boardgamearena.com/Gamehelpyaniv and I want to be sure that the game is explained correctly there.

And I would also add a suggestion here. You wrote "Any player who has more than certain points is eliminated from the game. The game continues with the remaining players, until only one survives." I think that some players on BGA won't like this rule. So please consider an option I found in wikipedia "A certain limit is set. Whenever a player crosses that limit, the game ends and the victor is the one with the smallest score."

Thank you for this nice game and the many variants you already implemented, ufm!

The game implementation is based on Pagat's Yaniv page.
The answers are:
- Yes.
- Yes.
- There is no such rule.

I will not add more variants, since there was a complaint already for 'too many variants' and I agree to a certain degree.
I cannot implement all variants in the world, so I chose simplest variants which do not bend fundamental rules too much.

Firstly fantastic that this is on BGA as it is one of my favourite games, I play daily on an iOS app. I note you mention about the default settings, and the traditional variants being too slow. I have never encountered a “15’s” variant I think for people new to the game it may put them off. I don’t know if if this is the right place for suggestions, but I have a couple.

- could the confirm selection be done away with, so you make your selection and click on one of the cards in play or a draw button. If possible this would speed the game up greatly. (Solo, another card game on BGA has similar mechanics)
- slapdowns, at the moment if you lay 2 2’s for an example and draw another you cannot slap down. All of the variants i have played allow this, again speeds up play.
- If possible it would be good if the slapdown could echo the solo mechanic where it is about reacting.

On the whole, thanks for this. Great adaptation within the limits of BGA platform. Just need a few more players :)

Suggestions should be posted on bugs/suggestions page: http://boardgamearena.com/bugs

- What do you mean? There is already a preference for toggling pickup confirmation. Check player preference panel.
- Not really. Slapdown itself is rare, and a slapdown after a set is even rarer for obvious reasons.
The implementation is based on Pagat and Wikipedia rule. I'm not changing rules any further.
- No. I personally hate Solo's intercept mechanism and I think it should be avoided to prevent the game from being a clickfest.
