How do battles work in a email/turn based setup?

Post by Dennis W »

Found this game here and enjoying the solo scenarios to learn it. I play a few other games here via the slower email/turn method and am curious how battles work using this method.

Does it bounce back and forth between players every time a new Range (A, B etc) activates? Seems like this could take a dozen back-and-forth email turns to resolve for even a small battle.

Trying to decide if it is worth it to start a 2 player game to introduce a friend to it, but wary that the First Impression might be skewed by week's long battles. Might be better to try and get a hard copy to introduce new players?

Yes, battles go back and forth. I'm not sure what you are talking about with 'email'. There is a turn based system on the site but that allows players to play games at a slower pace. In practice battles rarely take forever as usually both sides only have a limited number of types of ship.

But, note, the game is still being developed, you should not be using it to introduce anybody to because its still being tested.

I'm old. Still refer to 'turn taking' games via media as mail/email turn based games. BGA sends me an email when it is my turn.

Thank you for your concern, but we have been gaming for decades and fully understand what 'Early Access' or 'Beta' means. He owns over 700 board games and has worked in the industry. I've played the Solitaire well over 20 times and not had an issue. I enjoy it, I very much want to buy a hard copy + expansions....but.... I need to make sure my mates want to play it too before I lay out $100+.

Beta Coding issues will not dissuade any of us from deciding if we like the mechanics and how it plays in our group. But boredom might - if in a 4 player game - a Battle of a dozen ships total between two of them might take a week of rolling 3 dice, then passing the email back to him and he rolls 2 dice and back and forth - sometimes 1 die roll at a time. So the other two players cool their heels for a few days or more.

I completely understand that is how it is supposed to work. I'm asking if those who have experience in the turn-based method feel this may not be the game for that. Do you try and coordinate a time both peeps can be on and handle the battle in near-Real Time?

I would very much like to play with other players, but I don't have the hours in a single block to attempt this in Real Time. When I do I'm sitting at an actual table :)

The battles have a "combat doctrine" option which allows you to semi-automate the combat. At any point during combat, you can enable this mode, selecting from a few options on what priority target will be or when retreat might trigger. Combat will then proceed automatically, except when there is an option to screen ships. At the beginning of a round of combat where a player can screen ships, they will need to determine what, if any, ships will be screened, then combat will continue to auto-resolve for the remainder of the round. This can somewhat help speed up combat, where you don't need to give instructions to each individual unit.
