Playing from the same location is a Premium feature... feature???

Post by jimbo_jones »

Hi all,
A friend of mine and I decided to get together and have a game night and were surprised to see that after playing for a few hours that we started to get the message "You play from the same location as *************(*****). Playing from the same location is a Premium feature: Go Premium now!". You have to pay for a premium membership to play against your friend? The wording "This is a premium feature" seems a bit of a lie, how is that a feature? I found this article https://boardgamearena.com/doc/multipleaccounts and in there is says:

"You are allowed to play at the same table using the same IP (internet address).

When this happens, there will be a "this player plays from the same IP address as another player" warning under the affected players. This warning lets other players know that there are players at their table that are able to discuss the game outside of BGA.

If you wish to play from the same internet address as another person:

The best option is to not play at the same table, or play at a table where you know everyone.
If you play with strangers, make them comfortable with the fact you are 2 (or more) different people: do not discuss the game outside the chatroom, and DO NOT collaborate (or engage in kingmaking) with your partner."

As far as I can see we have not broken any user agreements. I understand that there is a risk that some players might collude if they are at the same location, but we are playing a number of separate games and a number of games against each other with no other players at the table, just us. I understand that there is a risk that some players might collude if they are at the same location, but blocking by IP address would not prevent this at all as those devious players could just use different internet access point such as their phones. This seems less like a feature, more like a deliberate attempt to drive up memberships... This doesn't seem right to me, I imagine that it would more likely drive players away from the site. What's going on?

This is mostly to discourage cheating, making multiple accounts and 1 person playing both accounts at once by using 2 separate browsers. Ofcourse you can still buy premium and cheat this way, but if you end up being caught, the punishment will feel more severe(reset in scores, karma loss, ...) and you can't just create a new account from scratch to start over.

BGA premium is very cheap for what they have to offer back, so complaining reflects badly upon yourself. Whining about it on the forum won't change things.

I believe the restriction is there to encourage people to play games in person rather than online.

Correct. From the FAQ:
Playing on BGA from the same location is not something common since if you are at the same place you can play the real physical board game. It makes sense to make it a Premium feature, so that using BGA remains a way to discover and enjoy board games with the whole world and does not become a means to avoid buying the real physical game.

I'm totally new to BGA, and I've only just noticed the gift point system, the more you play and contribute to things the more points you get and then can exchange them for premium membership. Actually not a bad system at all.

I still don't think blocking people from playing from the same location will prevent cheating, and another downside of this method is that it immediately rules out LAN parties. I am part of a community computer lab and I was totally intending to hold game nights here, invite people from within the local community to come down and join in the fun. But this rule of BGA's prevents us from doing so. It would be much better to allow people to come together to play rather than to have to sit at home in their homes completely separate from each other.

Exactly, and they only need 1 premium player per table.

Well - but this doesn't make much sense for games, that have only a part of the players with same IP. It only makes sense, if all of the players were in the same place.
I remember when they started this restriction, because back then I played a lot of Hanabi with someone from same IP (and Hanabi was not a premium game back then). We have the game at home, but we don't enjoy 2p game, so we always played on BGA. We were quite annoyed at the time. Fortunately there were other features and premium games that I was interested in, so it wasn't that painful to subscribe just for this "feature".

I accept the restriction - but the reason given in the FAQ is bad. Or it should be implemented in the way that it affects only tables where everyone is from same IP.
