UNABLE TO LOGOUT

Post by InkPets »

Accounts with Google Single Sign on prevent you from logging in with other accounts.

0) Sign up with Google single sign on. Log in.
1) Click in the right panel > Online > Log Out
2) It asks you
Are you sure?
Do you also want to log out from Google?

3) Click "Cancel" (If you click "Continue", then all of your Google accounts on every website are logged out! Why is this even a button?!)
4) If you are already on the main BGA site, you are logged back in immediately!
5) If you are on the forums (like right now) try to go back to boardgamearena.com so you can log into a different account

Result: You are automatically logged back in! You can't log in with any other account unless you log out of Google entirely from every website on the internet, and have to log back into everything again!

NOTE: I'm not filing a bug for this, because no one reads the website bugs until you get 500+ votes.
Proof: Here are other bugs reporting the same thing, that no one has looked at

Easy workaround: on any other page than the welcome page, you won't be logged in again.

But either way, what sense does this have? If someone accesses your computer without you logging out of Google, then browse to BGA, they will be able to login to BGA. If you use a social login, the only way to be really logged out is indeed to log out from the social media in question, that's the principle of identity federation.

So it seems that probably what you need is to dissociate your account from Google (this is available in preferences / account) and use basic email/password to login.

Just realized that your all caps blinded me to part of your argument which is that you want to log in with multiple accounts. Assuming that this is a legitimate use of multi accounts like sharing your computer with other BGA users in your home, indeed what you describe can be a hindrance.

In practice, the solution is the same as the one I have described (dissociating your account and using standard authentication); automatic login with social media is a convenience for a single user context, not intended for a multi-users context.

Footnote: there will also be a change in the coming weeks with the Google Identity Library having changed, and that issue will be somewhat mitigated with a limited delay where the automatic login will be suspended after logout, which should allow for the usecase you described.

Yes, I'm thinking of the use case where you have multiple people using the same computer, and multiple Google accounts logged in
