Thermopyles: Strategy, Thoughts, & Game Error

Post by Gisele »

I have played only 19 times, but the best strategy that I see is to retreat until turn 6. This maximizes the cards in your hand. This is the best possible opening as it maximizes your information and utilizes the extra dice every turn. I hope someone can show me why this isn't the case, because it makes the game very 1 dimensional.

From there, just play a Spartan 2, 3,or 4 less than the highest combat value in the pair of Persians giving yourself a 3, 4 or 5 out of 6 chance of clearing (depending on your hand/board i.e. play on safer side if the 2 Persians will both give you an extra draw). Play out the game and hope for good dice rolls. Use your lower ranked Spartans (10-14ish) with support (1+ dice) when you are about 6 less than the highest combat value of the 2 Persians.

There are 2 routes to win the game. Getting 12 Persians into the graveyard, or clearing the deck. It seems less likely to get 12 into the graveyard as you need at least 1 support for each 2 Persians because the annihilation value is high. And since you only have 4 support dice, you will average 9-10 Persians in the graveyard with decent rolls. Focus on clearing the deck until someone calculates which route is statistically better to follow.

If the retreat till turn 6 strategy turns out to be the best possible opening, the game will become reptitive - as the rest of the game is essentially rolling dice and hoping for 3s and up. On the plus side, it plays quickly at about 5 minutes a game.

***Admins*** There is an error when you reach 0 cards and try to Draw. The load icon continually works, but will never resolve until you refresh.

Hi Gisele,

Players have a hand limit of 5 cards. Therefore immediately retreating to 6 is not optimal as you have to discard quite many cards along the way... I'm not sure though if hand limit was implemented correctly in the beginning (I was only able to test the game first time today), but at least now it seemed to work according to the rules.

Touko, thank you for the reply. When I played the game, hand size was unlimited! A limited hand may change the strategy.

I've just played this twice after reading the rules and must admit I'm very suspicious. I can't help to think this game is 90% luck-based. I just didn't catch the strategic trick.

Any hints?

It took me a few runs before I learned how to play and which cards to put dice on. I haven't won through Elimination yet. My strategy is if I can add a dice that has a 1/2 chance of repelling the two persians, I use that card. I try to utilize the low cards.
