Computer hard crashed, got abandonment penalty

I was playing this game below when my computer hard crashed, then took a looong time installing updates, resulting in me getting hit with an abandon:

Is there any way to rectify this? I've NEVER abandoned a game intentionally. Then again my reputation is still at 100% even though my profile page also mentions the penalties?

I don't think so. Your reputation is not just about you, it's also about your computer and your network. It's nothing to worry about if it happens once in a while, anyway.

You probably got an email, saying that the first abandon is without karma penalty, but that you shouldnt repeat it.

Just think about it. There is no way that BGA could determine if a game was abandoned because of bad luck or because of something you had influence on. Penalties happen, no worries. The Karma system is there to mark the ones with frequent "bad luck".

This was know strategy back in the day when I played Red Alert 2 online. Some players might have unplugged their internet connection when they were losing so it would count as a disconnection and not as loss in their statistics.

this kind of thing is why I exclusively play with people I know and with no time limits. which is a shame, as I'd like to play more board games.

You can install the BGA app on your phone. When your computer crashes, you can still login that way and continue playing, or at least let your opponents know why you can't play, and that way maybe agree to all abandon the game.

I used to worry about bad Karma but it’s no biggy if you take a hit once in a while! Recently I fell asleep during a game! So it was definitely my fault but no malice intended! I felt bad that people had been left waiting for me to time out though.
