"Mistake" or "Lucky" Comments Bother Me During Games or "Man (or Woman), Don't be a Hater"

Post by hayduke »

Now, I play a lot of 7 Wonders duel. I am currently top 100 and drift sometimes in the top 20, and down to whatever pit I fall into too.

Now my gripe.....

I understand when players say that I "was lucky" or they "made a mistake" because maybe I was or they did (I know players can also say this to save face or what have you). Buuuuuuuuuut I feel like it discounts any skill that I played with and god knows if they didn't make that ONE mistake or the cards didn't break my way they would have won.

At what point is it just, yeah I know when to capitalize on mistakes or I know when to make an educated gamble on what cards will come after a I build a replay wonder.

It just bothers me a little, and sometimes I fire back a little snark because that's how I am.

That's it!

I enjoy talking about the game and the choices afterwards and I'm glad to hear if there has been a silly mistake or a luck involved that I have missed. Just saying opponent was lucky doesn't provide / initialize that conversation and is in my opinion just rude.

I have only once got that kind of message. When I started to play 7 wonders duel in arena mode and got an opponent from elite level in one of my first games I got extremely lucky at the end and won against odds of 1/8. The response was a chat message "do you even know how lucky you are?" was rude but I found it some what funny at the moment :D

In 7 wonders duel and some more luck based games (like Lucky numbers) I might say "I was lucky" when I win against odds as sort of an apology :)

The 'mistake' part is something I sometimes do, in one particular game: Battle of Lits. The reason is that it is the only game I feel I'm quite good at here. So when I loose against an opponent because I made a big mistake, I actually say it in chat. I am someone who tends to talk quite a lot in chat, obviously most of the time either positive things or just some loose talk to get a conversation going. So in that respect I feel that it's not wrong to talk about my own mistakes either, although I must admit it's mainly a way of getting my frustration about my mistake out of the way.

I would however never call out another player for getting lucky, nor would I make a 'mistake' comment in another game, certainly not vs a higher ranked player. Correction, I might do so, but not as a means to look for excuses, but just to make fun of myself if it's something silly I did, so in a lighthearted way.
