You were the hidden saboteur in the SABS group, weren't you ?

I guess these TIPS are for you, if you don't know them all already:

[TIP] : Always always ALWAYS ask your teammates before playing a RF (=Rock Fall), either you are sab or digger
[TIP] : Diggers, try to save your crosses and T paths to dig straight, instead of curving
[TIP] : It is recommended to check either top or bottom card at first instead of middle one
[TIP] : You can flip/rotate your path cards 180°
[TIP] : Goal cards automatically rotate to match the path they are connected to, if necessary
[TIP] : Diggers, when playing several T path in a row, it's recommended to alternate them (up/down/up/down...)
[TIP] : Diggers, beware of "RF spots" you could create from a crossing section
[TIP] : Diggers, try not to dig "simple" paths when sabs are free (they could play a DE = Dead End), especially at the beginning.
[TIP] : Alternatively try to play a "multiple" path after a "simple" when it's the case.
[TIP] : Diggers, double break the lowest sab (in the list), so they won't be able to fully fix each other in the meanwhile
[TIP] : Going to the right (colomn by colomn) is much harder than digging vertically (line by line). Try to dig in front existing path, instead of from top or bottom...
[TIP] : Sabs, try to keep at least one break to subdue last diggers' hope when they are about to reach the gold
[TIP] : Sabs, be carefull when you dig, you may actally help diggers to get closer to the gold when you curve or play vertical T paths in front
[TIP] : Sabs and Diggers, sometimes discard is a good option !

So Balotelli, should you not follow these tips when playing whith experienced players (i.e. more than several hundred games), it's up to you of course, but you may increase their suspicion against you, if not than, in some tricky cases, ruining the game experience ...

This list is absolutely not exhaustive; I should take some time to update it and provide new tips so that every new players would fully enjoy the Saboteur Game and improve their tactics !

Have fun, my fellow dwarves !

Gruuumpffh.
Yorgad, comments like yours is exactly why i stopped playing this game. Communication which is needed for cooperation doesn't translate too well on the internet.

In real life, the beauty of this game is the surprise, the versatility and the dynamism people can input.
But in my online experience, every 2 games a player gets flamed away by a bunch of wisecracks who claim to have written The Holy Saboteur Bible holding a Post-graduate degree 'cum laude' in Saboteurology. I'm not judging you, but reasoning another player is stupid OR sabotaging just because this person decided to curve to gold with a "L" instead of a "T" makes this game not only very one-sided but it is often disrespectful towards other players who are maybe discovering this.
I agree there need to be cooperation between team members, but not like it is often done in-game. You should enjoy that not everyone is/thinks the same, makes this game more exciting!

@Shopliftersunite: I agree with you. Do you know why I post this topic? Because some of the members of SABS group have the bad behavior when playing saboteur.
You says that not everyone thinks the same. It's absolutely correct. When everyone make a mistake because he/she thinks differently with them (SABS group), they will easily judge you or blame you. They will kick someone you if they think he/she plays bad even though he/she's not necessarily like that. And if they make a mistake they won't be blamed at all. This is happened when playing with some of them. When I said to give the red thumb down for him for playing bad, his friend from the same group defended him. I realized he played so bad because he helped his friend to be 1st. They like a pro when judging the others but like a noob when being judged. Also there are some of the members who uses multiple account. But they didn't say anything. This group should be closed as soon as possible.

Hi Shop,

I am glad you took some time to read my post. I think however you didn't totally get my point: these tips are not claiming to be a Sab's Bible (though I like the idea...), I sometimes don't follow them, and often you just can't, but from my experience, playing "randomly" isn't actually helping (the number of cards is limited).

Some of these tips are common sense (such as "RF spots"). Some are just facts (goal cards rotates automatically). Most of them were told me by very experienced players, I thought it would be helpful to share them with everyone (I forgot to mention they apply for 7 or 10 players with standard rules).

Saying it's very one-sided and often disrespectful is a little exagerated... Saboteur game offers so many epic situations: if it was one-sided, SABS players wouldn't play it again and again restlessly, would they ?!

Regards,
Yorgad

PS: I hope BGA developpers will introduce the Saboteur extension ("Saboteur 2") ; it is all about surprise, sneakiness, turnarounds ; maybe more the way you like it ? :)

Clearly this issue has elevated into unreasonable heights. Almost nobody besides Baloteli and some SABS members are interested in it and, quite frankly, I'm glad for that, because it's a useless argument.

Maybe the problem of this argument is a simple misunderstanding. The point of this group is to round up the best saboteur players in the site. How do we decide who are the best, you may ask? Simply put, we do it depending on the way they play the game. Don't get it wrong. Saboteur is a unique game in an aspect of balance between two randomly put teams: if a member of team A does a certain move in a way he/she thinks might be a good move, but because he/she is an unexperienced player (later on called: newb*), that move actually helps team B. This sometimes escalates into an argument from the team members (if they are used to playing without newbs) for helping the other team. Every game would be like that, but all other games in BGA are played "free for all" instead of team-based.

Famous Yorgad's TIPS are not a section from the bible of SABS or any kind of spiritual enlightenment manifest which the group follows. Such thing does not exist. TIPS are not even "official" tips owned by the group. They're just Yorgad's opinion with which most of us happen to agree, because they were created considering experience. However, they are a good criterion for distinguishing good players from newbs because they are not really subjective. It is a fact that putting a cross to curve is - in 95% of cases - a waste of otherwise universal card, knowing that there are curves which are only good for curving. Unless you are a sab. Sabs don't need any rules except the one that would say "don't get the gold".

I understand that sometimes good players get a little over the edge and rage against someone who makes a mistake, especially a mistake which costs the round. I used to do that often myself, therefore, most of my TDs are for that same reason. The thing is, we are not elitists who despise people who play badly. We just don't want to play with those people who make lots of mistakes, until they get better - because, since this is a team-based game, their gameplay affects our fun. It is also true that good players make mistakes from time to time. It is true that we don't judge good players in way we judge newbs when they make mistakes, because we know them - they are good players and they rarely do mistakes or those mistakes are petty (We treat differently those with whom we play for the first or second time because we don't know if they are good or not-so-good players generally). We know each other, we share good gaming moments among each other and we remember those moments. We become friends. If you are familiar with how humans interact with each other, you should know that people tend to forgive the ones who are closer to them. It's natural and normal.

Personally, I remember when Baloteli shouted at me because I told I don't want to play with him. I'm not yet sure if he understands it was not personal, even when I told that. I don't want to play Saboteur with lots of people, that's why I am a member of SABS. It does not mean that I will never want to play with Baloteli. I haven't played with him for a long long time and I have no idea if he is now a good or a bad player.

Shopliftersunite said it is disrespectfull to tell new or not-so-experienced players how must they play. Is it disrespectful to tell them what are the best tactics to raise their chances to achieve victory? Maybe it is disrespectful if someone tells how to play in a disrespectful way (as I told before, it can happen in case someone gets angry, because the mistakes made by newbs affect everyones experience) - but that's a whole different matter.

Finally, blaming SABS because some of their members, in your opinion, behave badly is making no logical sense whatsoever. The group is just a band of people and their administrators do not even represent the group. Every member represents it and they do it differently. Maybe there are some who behave badly, but tell me - how does that make closing entire group legitimate?

--------------------------------
*newb (or noob, for that matter) is not an offending name in my post or whenever I use it anywhere. It means "newbie" which indicates someone being new at something. I, however, use it here also as a way to call not new, but still inexperienced players or those who failed to learn from their experience.

Here’s two cents from a relatively new Saboteur addict.

I started playing Sab a little less than two months ago and have grown to really love the game. After a first few with similarly inexperienced players like myself, I started playing at tables with SABS and/or S A B S members. As a beginner, I found advice given by these players, such as Yorgad’s famous tips, to be very helpful and constructive. While playing the right moves as a saboteur may seem intuitive to new and old players alike, being a good little digger is somewhat trickier. As we know, in order for diggers to bring home the big pot of gold, especially in a three-versus-four game, they must optimize how each of the path cards contributes to the windy and windy journey rightward. This naturally gives rise to common sense guidelines such as using curves to curve and crosses to move horizontally/provide multiple pathways. Having found others’ advice to be helpful, I have followed suit and tried to relay some of these best practices. My intent is obviously not to condescend or criticize, but simply to share and help improve our chances of success and overall experience of the game (if I have come across otherwise, I do apologize). On a side note, Uncle Yorgie is a phenomenal player who often plays with less experienced sabbies and takes the time to explain the rules and give his POV on optimal tactics. If “bad behavior” is taken to characterize SABS, then I would say adroit tactics, good sportsmanship and love for the game are also emblematic of the group's many green and red cloaks such as Yorg, Pej, Ux and others who have been part of this discussion.

As Ux pointed out, and as any player knows, Saboteur is a collaborative game, and the decisions of one can have game-changing consequences for others. This is the nature of the game, and thus people may often find themselves in frustrating situations caused by the bloopers of a supposed teammate. But how different players react is a reflection of the situation and their individual sportsmanship. The generalization that a 100+ member group comprises “bad-behaving” players, whatever that may mean, seems silly and has probably received more attention than it deserves.

Yes, at the end of the day, we are all passionate about these games, and that is why many of us live our lives in the arena. At times heated debates arise and lead to hostility amongst players. I feel lucky that I have some BGA friends who understand both the game and the fact that it is a game. We play to win, and we play to laugh and enjoy each other’s company. I recommend that everyone keep track of players he or she likes and try to catch them when they’re online (On a side note, I like playing with the people that Balo blacklisted, and I also like playing with Balo).

Feel silly about writing this at 11pm at night but just wanted to share some additional perspectives when I stumbled upon these posts.

Lastly, thanks to the BGA admin for providing this amazing online space – I can’t imagine how much work it is to not only manage the site and bring us new games (expedition is really fun, by the way!), but also respond to frequent member requests and petty quarrels.

Cheers everyone - please don’t take it too seriously :).
