How is win rate calculated?

Post by TomJackilarious »

Many of my win rate numbers don't seem to make any sense so I'm hoping someone can explain how they are calculated. I know it is expected that win rate can be above 100% for multiplayer games but even looking at games I've only played as 2 players things don't to seem to add up.

For example you can see in my profile that I've played 3 games of patchwork.
2 wins -- both of which were turn-based and played as: "Unranked game (Training mode)"
1 loss -- actual non-training mode game

So if all three games count towards win rate then I should have 66.6% and if "unranked games" are excluded it should be 0%. But somehow it says my winrate is 33%.

How does BGA come up with this win rate number?

It looks like it's kind of a weird formula. A 50% winrate in a multiplayer game means "you beat half the people you played and you lost to half the people you played".

When you first start, their system can give winrates over 100%. If you play a single 4 player game and win, your winrate will be 300% (you beat 3 people and played one game).

I found someone else who explained it better:

My best guess is they changed how training mode games are counted (so they don't kill the win rate). And they changed them so each one counts as a 0.5 win rate regardless of what happens in the game.

edit: this works for a few of your games but not all of them. definitely something weird in how they handle how training games count. probably trying to fix the problem of them always counting as a loss but the math or code they are using isn't right.

Yeah. I was kind of assuming there is some bug with how they calculate win rate when "unranked game (training mode)" is involved.

For the few games I've played exclusively in ranked mode all the win rate numbers seem to be calculated correctly based on the math linked above for how it handles win rate calculations for games with more then two players.
