Recent activity vs Chat with participants

Can anyone explain the difference in tournaments between typing messages in the “Recent Activity” textbox, and the “Chat with participants” box. Is there a difference in whether players are notified that there are messages to read?

Do either of these methods notify all players that there’s a message to read?

The chat with participants button will create a chat window the bottom of the page for everyone involved in the tournament that is currently online. This will therefore give those people the message there is something to read.

The recent activity will be there for anybody to read that is browsing the tournament page. Nobody gets notified that it is there, except those that have previously replied when new comments are added into the message.
