I know what the K factor is, the thing is that the formula for calculating elo cannot be universal for all games and be fair. In this case its in 7 wonders architects. The ammount of elo varies a lot on the difference between win rates. But even a monkey can achieve a somewhat 40% ish WR in the game and gain elo. Where as me with 60% ish elo am punished for having good WR.

BTW: I agree that the Elo system has issues. It is fair though, it's just not as useful as a rating system could be on BGA.

I think the OP is complaining that in games with a high luck quotient, a good player will quite often lose to a less skilled player, losing a lot of ELO points in one game.

I would say this may be annoying, but isn't unfair. Over a lot of time and plays, it will even out.

But the obvious solution would be not to play very luck-based games with ratings on. Play in training mode instead and avoid all the randomness. And keep ELO ratings for games where skill is a very high, or the only factor.

If the person has the same Elo as you, you would lose the same points as you gain for a win. You have a higher Elo than your opponents in these games, which is why you lose more for a loss than you gain for a win. If they have lower Elo you should win the majority of the time. With this difference you are expected to win about 3/4 times so you should gain 5 for winning but lose 15 for losing.

I don't think that's the case (unless you have only few games and your K-factor is still changing). Can you show an example? (link to tables)

Please keep in mind that you usually see ELO (as well as ELO-changes) as an integer while in fact there are more digits that aren't shown in most cases. Those digits are sometimes rounded up and sometimes rounded down depending the effect they have on the result.

Against someone with lower elo than you, you lose more points when you lose than you win when you win.
Against someone with higher elo than you, you win more points when you win than you lose when you lose.

That's the whole point of elo. It's not just a "number of victories" or "rate of victories". Victories against lower ranked players count less (because you were "supposed" to win anyway), and victories against higher ranked players count more (wow, you beat the nr1 player!). And the opposite for loses. As sprockitz says, this is balanced out by the fact that you will win more often against lower ranked players. The elo rank only makes sense (if it does any) in the long run, punctual changes are only anecdotal.
