Unbox Now

Post by pchallinor »

When will we get details for how the Asmodee's Unbox Now announcement affects BGA subscribers? Does this mean there will be a new type of subscription? Will the new games in the Unbox Now label be available to Premium Subscribers?

After a little bit of digging on their site I find this:

https://gift.unboxnow.com/en/

With this verbage on the page:

"Board Game Arena Premium access:
Join the largest boardgame table in the world! With this Premium membership, you'll get unlimited access to all Premium games, statistics, tournaments and much more!"

So it seems you just get premium subscription with the unbox now codes?

Some official statement on BGA would be much appreciated though.

PR is a bit confusing about that ... no global premium?
"Each game also comes with a free six-month membership to Board Game Arena for that specific title."

Came to talk about this. It worries me that there is talk about a "title specific" subscription.
The link that deusastra provided states the membership will be a premium membership. I'd like to think that the venturebeat article misquoted.

I don't mind paying the premium for the site, but I will not be paying a "by title" subscription.

Anyone from BGA/Asmodee have comments?

I'm noticing some games listed that aren't on BGA yet. Namely ticket to ride.

As I understand it, premium will still be an access to all games, I don't think they plan to change that.
This "premium for one game" is just a little offer to make new players try Bga... And the idea is to convert them to standard premium :)

And Catan. Interesting. Perhaps these games will require a special subscription.

Hello !

At first, we are very happy to participate to this operation. Unbox Now goal is to bring new players to the hobby and to BGA using the games we love the most, and this is a great part of our mission!

The BGA benefit you get from the Unbox now code may be different from a game to another, and from a time to another, and even from a player to another, because all Unbox Now games are not on BGA and because we are testing different things to make sure this will be a great success (+ and opportunity for you to get access for free to these games).

As a rule of thumb, if the game is available as Premium game on BGA, you will get a free access to this game, even if you are not Premium, for a given period (ex: 6 months, 1 year...). If the game is not available on BGA, you will get a Premium free trial.

Obviously ou plan is to have all these games on BGA at some point in the future, even if we cannot guarantee this at 100%. But what you can keep in mind is that the final goal would be that when you buy a physical board game, you are able to access it on BGA for some time, even if you are not Premium.

It is worth noticing that if this method is successful we would offer to all publishers with games on BGA the same thing, because if it makes sense for Asmodee it makes probably sense for all game publishers.

To conclude: we are testing different things to bring new players to the hobby, and to bring these new players to BGA. BGA cannot exists without physical board games, it is BGA core mission to support physical board games, so this is an attempt to do another step in this direction :)

So does this mean that users with a premium membership will be able to retain access to the games in the unbox now collection (Carcassonne, Splendor, etc.), and when games that aren't yet on BGA but in the Unbox Now collection (Catan, Ticket to Ride, etc.) are added, premium users will have access to these titles without having to purchase the physical copy?

Unbox now's code terms of use explicitly state (https://gift.unboxnow.com/en/legal/code-terms/:

"This Promo Code allows the User, if they so choose, to visit the unboxnow website to perform the procedures needed to benefit from the following promotion:
One month of free Premium membership on the BGA website: valued at €4 including tax (four euros all taxes and fees included)."

This just mentions premium membership, not access to a specific game.

Apologies, I am just a little confused.
