Concede vs Losing -- Does it affect ELO scoring?

Post by Mayhem2020 »

Hello,

I usually play Takenoko. Twice now, my opponent conceded the game while I was discarding all of my cards at the end. If the game continued, I would have won, so it doesn't make much sense to concede with mere seconds left in the game.

Is the scoring for ELO ranking different when conceding the game vs letting it play to the end?

At the risk of this becoming the monthly thread about how awful conceding is....no, conceding simply ends the game awarding full ELO points to the victor as if it had concluded normally.

It is a very common, entirely normal behavior, in real world game play. The implementation on BGA works almost exactly the way an experienced gamer would expect it to work. Yes, casual players are often surprised by it but it is a totally normal behavior and unlike timing out which is open to exploitation there are no issues with the implementation.

No, conceding seconds before the game ends is definitely weird. It's bad style. You can concede when it actually saves some time (= when game is decided early but would still take long). But when you spent the time until being just about to finish, then please be respectful and spent the few more seconds to finish the normal way.

No, it is entirely normal and a common real world etiquette. Chess players do not insist on playing out a mate in 2, even though it would only take a few seconds, nor do players of Carc or Ticket insisting on counting out all of the points in the last few seconds. It is rare for casual players and players of multi-player games to do this, and so such players misunderstand the etiquette amongst regular players of two player games. Online sites have lots of players playing competitive two-person versions of games who have only ever played casual multi-player games in real life, those people, rather than understand and learn from their new experience accuse people of behaving inappropriately.

In chess, the result is only a yes or no. In many games there are points summed up, hidden cards revealed, some endgame fluff etc.

I have played many Go-Tournaments. In Go it is very common to give up. It is even rude to not resign in a clearly lost position. But when you are behind in points for a long time, then there's the situation of "having missed the proper moment to resign". When you are so close to the natural end of the game, and you haven't given up for such a long time, then you are expected to count the points. It's rude to resign right before counting (unless a big blunder just has happened). And on BGA you don't even have to do the counting manually - it goes automatically.

In games where there's a final score that is revealed / counted in the end and you played almost until that moment - then please let the other player see the score and possibly hidden information that's getting revealed. Also sometimes there's some animation that might feel satisfying to watch (no matter how big the difference). Please be mindful that some players like to see that especially when it only takes a few more seconds for you.

However I agree on games that do not involve such counting/revealing etc. like Chess, Hive, many other abstracts or games with open score during the game without endgame bonuses - it would be ok to resign even late.

I guess with all the threads requesting to suppress the end-of-game animation for achievements, etc., I forget that some people actually like superfluous animation. Up until now I had chalked up the desire to play out a lost position to that psychological thing like if you say the alphabet and end on 'Y' it really bothers some people.

Stopping the alphabet on Y is a nice analogy :D. It's less disturbing to stop on P - most people won't be annoyed by that. So if you're gonna stop - stop on P. Or maybe R. Please don't stop on X or Y ;)

BTW the animation can easily be skipped by pressing F5 or just leaving the table by clicking i.e. BGA-logo.
