Who thought, Arena ranking is good the way it works?

Post by Alex_tgiu »

I do like playing Arena mode for certain games and always try to reach Elite in my favorite ones.
But the whole system is just not thought through. Playing against a lower ranked player says nothing about his strength, it could be a newbie, but it could also be a very good player who just not yet started playing the current season or Arena mode at all.
And it is abssolutely nonsense to have 0 points for a victory, which already happens when winning as platinum vs. bronze. This just does not make sense, if a game is 100% risk and 0% chance.
It's basically ok that you have ranks and that you can lose and win points trying to reach the next level. But in all cases, a victory must give you at least 1 point. And the algorithm should match more equally, so that it does not often happen to play someone several ranks lower.
Just have a look, how every sports league works...

What does this have to do with my thesis?
The point is not when you play or that you know whom you play, but that in a sports league there are usually teams of comparable strength. And no matter who you win against, you'll receive the same amount of points.
I don't say, we need to have the same amount of points in all cases on BGA, but it should never occur, that you don't recieve anything for a victory.

Yes, you're right.

The reason it doesn't work is because everyone gets demoted so much at the end of a season. Which basically means you all start from scratch. The leagues thing is a bit of a pasted on theme. There aren't really enough players to match everyone optimally.

I started a 4 player game of Agricola (pretty popular game). It said 1 hour wait for just 1 opponent. I've been waiting 9 hours now, and now it's just me searching for 3 opponents...

Someone has just opened a thread about how arena settings are ignored...

No-one from BGA plays arena, tournaments or even normal games against strangers. You can rub their noses in it, but these kind of anomalies will never be considered.
The response will be - look at the statistics, Arena is raging success you must just not understand how it works like everyone else.

It was just a quick answer.
What happen in sports league can't be easily put on bga.
You said it, you want to have teams of comparable strength, which don't happen in sports.

Usually the main problem of thoses spots is to find solutions to it. And copy what happen in sports league can't be a solution.
Your solution should work, but in reality, since you got a score in elite anyway, that doesn't seem to matter, correct me if I'm wrong there.

I totally agree. The ranking system makes no sense. I've won a game and gained nothing. Even losing a game makes no sense in your drops for ranking.

Once you are elite, it doesn't matter, but on the way to it, I just don't get it in my head, why I don't get anything for winning, the amount of points when playing a someone severals ranks lower just stay the same after a victory. So the maximum you can reach is not losing anything, which is a pretty strange thing from the Arena creators.

Right, that's the next problem, if you have leagues, it should be as in other games, you stay there if you are ranked high evough.
