Non-playing Player who has signed up for A LOT of tournaments

You lose only 4 karma points for timing out of a turn-based tournament game. It's too low.

They probably should track tournament karma separately than regular karma.

I agree with what someone else said. If you time out on more than 2 tournament games, you should get banned from entering new tournaments for 30 or 90 days, and auto-withdrawn from tournaments that haven't started yet.

In a swiss tournament, someone who times out should get auto-withdrawn from the tournament.

Instead of karma a percentage of completed tournaments over the last year might be more useful.

Sometimes time zone mismatches can lead to time outs even when you are trying to play everyday. But for chronic time misuse, such as players running out of time and the game isn't even 25% complete, a more severe penalty would be nice. Maybe they can only enter 1 tournament at a time until successfully completing the tournament.

I wasn't actually looking for a thread about this, just happened to click the tournaments forum by accident... and yet somehow, this is relevant to me. I opened two tables for Santorini last night and * took both tables. I have a bad habit of checking profiles, easily amused by seeing win rates of my opponents. And when I did look at their profile, I see they've left 173 games and ran out the clock (is that what that means?) on 410 games.

The baffling thing is this person has 100% perfect karma. I'm confused, then, what does karma mean? Should it not be an indication of how sportsmanlike a person is and whether you'd like to play with them? And when I try to give them a thumbs down, to warn other players, I'm told "This is their first time playing this game", which isn't true at all.

To be fair, they HAVE taken a few turns so far... but my fear is they'll stop playing soon enough.

* is back? This player signed up for over 1,000 turn- based tournaments and then disappeared for many months. All the tournaments suffered - over 400 were timed out. Now, the player is back and scoring high- winning tournaments. Maybe life overcame the player but now they are back and will try to be good?

Sheesh, and I felt bad for signing up for 2 Feast for Odin tournaments recently, being too stupid to realize they were running exactly during the time I was going on vacation and wouldn't be around.

Karma is fairly meaningless when you can pretty much go from 0 to 100 within an hour and lots of quick games of Connect 4

This is very open to abuse as pointed out. The player experience in tournaments can be painful.

The agricola tournament I'm playing in currently is just awful - 20 rounds of swiss - half the games have a timed out with various duff players. People don't know or care where the unsubscribe button is. Why are they not auto-ejected and restricted from joining other tournaments?

Side note, the timing out positional results don't seem to be consistent either. sometimes 1,1,1,4, sometimes 1,2,3,4.

Nobody from the BGA team plays in tournaments, they have no idea.

This is a well-known problem with tournaments that the site admins haven't addressed.

I'm playing in an Incan Gold Swiss tournament where something like 10%-20% of the players are absent and it's 5 player games. Half the games are timeouts. Swiss tournaments are unplayable with lots of absent players, especially when the tournament is configured for "don't play the same person twice".

They need to implement the following changes:

1. In a Swiss tournament, if you timeout in a game you get kicked from the tournament.
2. If you have multiple tournament timeouts, you should get banned from entering tournaments. Two timeouts in the past 90 days: 7 day ban on entering new tournaments. Five or more timeouts in the past 90 days: 30 day ban on entering new tournaments.
3. In a "multiplayer elimination" tournament, if someone timeouts everyone else in the game advances, even if that isn't how the tournament was configured. So if a tournament was configured "6 play 3 advance" and someone timeouts, then the other 5 players all advance.

I agree with the suspension of tournament play and not being able to win in a tournament. I am currently sitting in one now where the top scorer in my game has a negative three plus hours. Out of four of us, two of us have played in a timely manner. It has been excruciating just to finish this game. For the person who has such a time deficit to end up winning the game, that seems totally wrong. Being rewarded for holding everyone else's play up. We should be able to kick them like in regular games. The people with the positive time should be able to move on if scores align. We have to agree to play in a timely manner when we sign up for tournaments, why isn't that rule imposed?
