On the configuration page for manual setup it says "80 players available for this game," compare to CuBirds which is "374 players available for this game." I've spent 15 minutes sitting around waiting for a game to start.

Is there a way to see what proportion of the number of arena games (which was used to decide the popularity of the games) included turn-based games?
If there is I don't know how to do it, but there are currently 67 turn-based Arena games on the go, so you wouldn't think it would be that hard to start them. I haven't tried myself, though, since I find trick-taking games can be pretty slow to play turn-based. Real-time games seem to fire pretty regularly for Papayoo, though, and don't take very long.

Congrats on your first Elite! There are a few people on three already, though it's hard to tell if they're taking part in the Decathlon or if it's just a coincidence.

Thanks.

Actually, I'd prefer to play real time for games like Papayoo where card tracking is important and you can do it perfectly if you play turn-based. It was the real time game where I couldn't find players.

Apparently I've been trying for my second elite since 25 April. On to the next one.

msclark wrote: 23 March 2022, 12:23 Like before, I selected 10 games at random, with some minor tweaking to make sure there was a good balance of short/long games and abstracts/euros/card games, and I'm publishing it early to give people the chance to get to 100 Elo before the season kicks off. This is the list:
  1. Stone Age
  2. Can't Stop Express
  3. Clans of Caledonia
  4. Res Arcana
  5. Dragonheart
  6. Trek 12
  7. La Granja
  8. Santorini
  9. CuBirds
  10. Papayoo
To enter, all you have to do is play! At the end of the season, I'll compile the rankings of all the games and come up with a combined ranking like the one above. If you don't want to play all ten, you don't have to; see how many you can achieve before the end of the season. I'll rank you if you can get to 5. Best of luck, and maybe I'll see you at the tables.
How's the season going for everyone?

It would be nice to see interim updates at 1/3 and 2/3 through the season. I admire anyone who reaches multiple elites, especially when some games take over an hour to play. My only elites are in games that are completed in 10-15 minutes, so I have time to get numerous reps in. It took me many games to get over the hump in Papayoo, starting from never having played before to grinding through to elite. If I did the same for Clans of Caledonia I'd never have time for it.

I'd do an update, but since there are just a few days left I'll save the surprise for next week! But last time I checked, very few people were taking part and it feels like, fun as it has been for me, this idea doesn't really have any legs. That's ok, though: better to try and fail than not to try...

I got to 5 elites and called it a day. If there had been a bit more competition pushing me on I might have gone for 7 or 8, but I don't think I was ever completing all 10. I think steve5332 (last season's winner) is on 6 and might get to 7, so I would assume that he'll remain the champion, but we'll see when I run the numbers.

Congrats on getting elite at Papayoo - it's a pretty lucky game, so you can definitely go through bad runs. Was that your third?

Thanks for trying. Perhaps because there is some overlap in concept with the BGA Masters 2022, people who might be inclined to do the Decathlon do that instead because it's "official."

Understatement of the thread.

I was going to try for CuBirds (another short game), but I knew I'd never get two more after that, so I got sucked into Bubblee Pop and Space Base and ended rising to elite in both.

So congratulations to steve5332 for winning this silly little experiment again. He achieved 6 elites in the end, just ahead of my 5. There were then a bunch of people on 4, though it's entirely possible that they have no idea that the decathlon even exists! Still, we needed a bronze medal and that went to ogura_ojisan.

Thanks to those who took part. A slight shame that it wasn't more successful, but I still had fun and that's the main point after all. :) Best of luck with your future arena seasons!

It amuses me for some reason to think that by happenstance people have risen to elite in this specific set of games. Granted, some of them are pretty popular, but still.

I tried :-) I think 10 is probably too many. To really compete on total Elite points, 5 might be more realistic.

Thanks for organizing this.
