If a player has a negative clock, you can always kick them, ONLY IF IT IS THEIR TURN. You can't kick them if it isn't their turn. That's probably why the player has a negative clock but hasn't been kicked.

This is unrelated but how do I create a tournament? I can't see it on the pull-down bar anymore

Petition to ban players that makes the game abandoned or forcing us to kick them for taking too long to make a single move many times from joining tournaments for a certain period of time please :| it just ruins all the fun and the whole competition which seems unfair for us players who really makes effort to win the game in a normal way. It's just frustrating that after all those efforts the winners are based on who got the highest thinking time remaining that it feels like it's not a real competition anymore. :(

You need to be a premium member to create tournaments. If you go to "Tournaments" under "Play Now", there should be a button to create a tournament, near where you pick the filters for which tournaments to display.

So for my previously mentioned Agricola tournament:
The next game I've got has just started:

https://boardgamearena.com/3/agricola?table=264077582

The same player that timed out is at the table, and hasn't logged in got 18 days.

What are the chances that this table will time out too?

I'm willing to bet money.

This is why I exclusively play "multiplayer elimination" tournaments only. The slow/absent players get knocked out in the first or second round. After that, you know you're going to play for real.

Swiss tournaments are unplayable, because the absent player gets to ruin a game every single round. If you have 4p matches and a 20% absent player rate, you can wind up with 50% unfinished games in a Swiss tournament.

That's not much of a solution. Unless the elimination tournament only eliminates 1 player per game, other players will be (quite likely unfairly) eliminated along with the player who runs out of time.

This player has played since this post, so it probably happened something that does not concern anyone but this player. This is life: players may leave the service for a while, they may be sick, they may even die, and there is nothing we can do about that.

I see several propositions to fix the situation in this thread, but I did not see anything that can improve the situation.

We are already eliminating players that does not show up when a game starts. Thus, as soon as an absent player does not join a table, he is eliminated from the tournament.

Obviously, this can't work for turn based, since there is no "join a table". However on turn based an absent opponent is a free win and you don't have to "wait" without playing since it is turn based, so this is not a so big issue.

What we cannot do is to eliminate players when they are expelled because of "out of time". We cannot do it because... it happens even to players that are not absent (and if you play tournaments regularly, you know this). Even in professional Chess tournaments, some players are out of time, and in this case they just lose the match, they are not eliminated from the tournament.

To conclude, we know it is frustrating, but we are already doing the right thing (= eliminate players that does not show up) and there is no other solution. Yes there are some absent players that are causing a lot of forfeits, this is unfortunate but this is not so often, and tournament participants have to deal with this...

No solution possible? If someone is doing a few hundred tournament games, it's clear it's (almost) impossible they will finish most of them. Yes theoretically it is possible. But if we experience that in such cases there's almost always trouble, the easy solution would be to prevent people from entering more than a certain amount of tournaments. Let's say you put the limit at 100. That's still a lot, right? But would solve situations like this. And it's not like they can't play more if they want to. Just not tournament games.

This was my idea from page 1 of this thread (quote below) - I agree that anyone with more than 150-200 turn-based games at once simultaneously is going to do a lot of time-outs - no matter how much they try - on the presumption they also eat/sleep/do anything other than just take turns on BGA. If you have 200 games going at once, and take 2 moves in each game a day - and you assume that each move takes 1 minute (by the time the page has loaded and you've had a think, and taken your move), then that's a minimum of 6h40 every day, non-stop without breaks, just to take those 2 moves per game (and if you have 400 games on the go - that's around 13 hours non-stop...). Many games require more than 2 moves a day. It just feels... unsustainable for anyone to try and keep up with for more than a couple of days (for about a week early last year, I ended up having about 120 games going on at once, and it was stressful! I've never gone above 50 since, and mostly have 5-20 at a time nowadays).
mrdoctor wrote: 20 April 2022, 12:13 Would a limit on the amount of tournaments a player is allowed to be playing simultaneously (or games with a timer that a player can play) be a good idea? Last year I got a bit enthusiastic and for about a week I think I had about 100 turn-based games running simultaneously - and it was stressful even to do it for just one week.

Maybe something like:
* Max 100 (or 75) turn-based games (non-tournament)
* Max 100 (or 75) active tournament sign-ups
* Unlimited training-mode/no-time-limit games

That'd still allow for 200 (or 150) turn-based timed games for those who really want to juggle that many games, plus allow an unlimited amount of other games where players won't get frustrated at the timer running over/games timing out. Although if someone signed up to 100 round-robin tournaments that'd generate 1500 (100x15) simultaneous games, so may need some planning to counter that...

Or at the least, change things so that reputation can't just be regained quickly by playing 20 quick games of Connect 4 and no actual repercussions.
