How does the doubling cube affect gameplay? Isn't it a purely gambling thing, trying to pressure the opponent to concede? Just somewhat curious about what it adds to the game with no money involved
It can be used to speed up the end game, eliminating the time for bearing off - if 1 player is far enough ahead to get the point, but not so far that they would get a gammon.
More importantly, it's a way to double the amount of points at stake. If the board state is in your favor, you can offer the doubling cube. If they accept, they keep the cube and you're playing for double, if they reject, you automatically win the point. This can go back and forth multiple times per game. A good way to either catch up in points or secure your lead, and it's great to use even without money at stake.
