Tournaments and the stupid timeout rules!

Post by worto03 »

I'm done with tournaments, 5 matches in, I'm winning the 6th game by miles when we come up against someone running out of time, I'd happily wait a few more days but we have a 15 day limit for the game, it's a no win situation.

So we all (the other 3 players) tie for 1st and get 4 points each instead of the 6 I would probably have got.

leaving me 6th in the leaderboard instead of 2nd.

I've read that it used to be done by age of account which doesn't seem very good either, is there a better way to do this that BGA just haven't bothered fixing or is it not that straight forward?

Wouldn't it be better to let the remaining players play it out then award points depending on where they finish like normal but with the timed out player coming last? I guess that only works in games like the one we were playing (space base) where the player interaction doesn't matter. As long as the dice get rolled for them what they do doesn't really effect the other players.

Maybe it does need to be different per game or selectable when you create a tourney - I've not been able to try that, as a tourney creator is there a good way round this or just unlimited days per match which I guess brings it's own problems.

I've been playing free for a few months now and creating tourneys was a reason I was thinking of going paid, I'll probably still go paid at some point but will be sticking to arena games from now on.

Cheers, sorry for the mini rant, maybe I should have left it 24 hours before I posted, just a bit miffed by it :-\

I'm searching for games where this would be annoying... Legendary inventors, Lord of Xidit, Sushi go could break the desserts, 7 Wonders, Seasons would need special rules.
But many games can be really wrong if the quit is at a bad moment, I'm thinking to Celestia. This game work well with -1 player, but having one player leave at a specific moment can totally ruin one play.
I planned to destroy that idea, but that look okayish. But that require lots of dev time.

The main drawback is if it's coded wrongly, you can transform a win into a loss, which is worst than a tie. So it need to be done for most cases correctly. And the complains are worst, because here you complain because you got a tie, but imagine if you lost the game...

But usually for those problems, it's the ideas which are missing.

Thanks for the reply, the problem here is that a tie at this point in the tourney pretty much rules me out of winning it, a draw or loss at this point is the same thing, I have to win every game to keep up with the top player - so be grateful for a draw just doesn't do it, if this is the way it is I can't play tourneys any more.

The winner isn't the best player - it's just the player who was lucky enough to not play in a game where someone timed out.

To be honest I'm surprised anybody bothers playing them it's that bad in my mind - it's just not a fair competition, it makes the whole thing kind of silly.

In arena mode, I'm not so bothered, lose a bit of ELO rating & get it back over the next few games - all good.
