Strands is now in Alpha!

Post by GTSchemer »

Strands, a minimalist strategy game designed by Nick Bentley (Blooms, Medo, Bug, Circle of Life) with help from artificial intelligence, is now in alpha.

"Strands has a wonderfully simple set of rules, but creates an incredibly deep emergent decision tree. Its rules are so simple it can be taught to children in minutes in its entirety. It's amazing, for how simple the rules are, how much one can look ahead into their strategy. I was very impressed with this game. It is in a word: Elegant."

- Emerson Matsuuchi, designer of Century: Spice Road

One player has white stones, the other player has black.

1. To start, Black covers any space marked "2".

2. From then on, starting with White, the players take turns. On your turn, cover up to X empty spaces marked "X". For example, you could cover any 3 empty spaces marked "3".

3. The game ends when the board is full. The player with the largest contiguous group of stones wins. If tied, compare the players' second-largest groups, and so on, until you come to a pair which aren't the same size. Whoever owns the larger wins.

A new update to Strands is live! This update makes several changes:

* Five new symmetrical big boards have been added -- B through F.

* A randomly-generated big board option has been added. Note that this board is NOT pure random! Instead, it uses styles and biases in certain areas. For example, if 6 appears, it is always in the corners. A certain region might be all 4, all 5, or mixed. However, the chance of that region being mixed is elevated. etc.

* Please be aware that the randomly-generated boards may NOT be balanced! They are intended for players who like to test their analysis skills. Please share your thoughts if you try this option, since Nick would love to hear from you.

* A last turn indicator player preference has been added. This is disabled by default.

* A player preference has been added to prevent ending your turn if you have placed less than the maximum possible number of stones. This is enabled by default.
