Re: Concealed dice

Post by waltero »

Better players arise from people who understand the game (including the probabilities that dice introduce).
Is this a game of War (WWII)? Recreating Battles fought during World War II...introducing dice changes the game. One example; Losing two or three units while crossing a Frozen river is no longer considered "thin Ice", it becomes Bad dice. Maybe it's time to introduce War to the game?
You can formulate any understanding you wish...leave it up to your imagination.

Dice serve a purpose - for beginners only! Dice are irrelevant. Introduce the Game to the players, we don't need Dice.
I'm not dissing Memoir 44 dice. I enjoy the board game and its dice. For a computer Game dice are irrelevant...a distraction.
I don't agree with it.
But you just said it?
People who blame the dice for their poor decisions will rarely turn into good players. People who credit the dice for their good decisions will rarely turn into good players.
What percentage of players is that?
Without seeing the dice (or being aware of them) there would be confusion about why this would happen.
My point exactly! Maybe it would be better understood - you shouldn't run infantry out in the open - out of Supply - running into a barricade, etc. learn to play War not dice...Concealing the dice, should not be as big an issue as it seems to be? The power of dice!
We really don't need them. Eliminate (option button?) their presence on the board and they will lose all power.

I know immediately when I'm up against a dice player...they are predictable.

You might think that I am bragging about how great of a player I am? I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying; I play a different game than many of you. I only wish players would at least try to play their best game possible...dice interfere with that...whether you know it or not.

BGA is not making a computer game based on a board game. They are creating a virtual implementation of a physical game. If the dice exist in the physical game, they must in the virtual game.

Yes, there is no button to press to say "roll dice." And there is no button to press to say "lift this piece up, and set it down here", or a button to say "draw a card at the end of my turn." But unless you believe that how you handle the physical dice affects the randomness of the result, the RNG implementation will produce a similar result.

Who doesn't believe?
I, personally like to have my rabbit's foot in one hand while throwing the dice with my other hand...always, always throw the dice with your left hand...if you are throwing one die, always, always throw with your right.
If the dice exist in the physical game, they must in the virtual game.
Who said anything about getting rid of the dice? I'm Simply suggesting having an option, using concealed dice...it would be helpful when trying to teach this game. As it is now, the dice do the teaching.

DO you want a War game or a dice game?

There's already a computer version of this game out there. Time for this game to evolve or it will remain the glorified game of Risk that it is. Don't get me wrong, I like Risk. I like this game. I don't like - when somebody comes over the radio, crying about dice or anything to do with dice.
Also; I can't get my fellow Grognard's to join in this game...I believe it is too dicey for them.

Uh, lemme think.

Oh, yeah. That person. In the post that started this thread.

We appear to be at an impasse. Further discussion will serve little purpose.

In the post that started this thread.
Need only look (up top) at the title of this thread...'Concealed Dice'
We appear to be at an impasse.
I'm not sure what you are going on about? Are you the computer programmer? Game is in Beta, I'll put my two cents in. old game needs new life. The more options the better. I Suppose this isn't the game for me. I'll take a looksee and see where its at in a few years.

It's kind of like when watching a movie. You are really getting into it, then somebody walks in and starts lambasting it, talking about how fake that is or how that is impossible, spoils the entire movie...no longer enjoyable.

If you can't deal with 'Concealed Dice', would you consider dice, and anything to do with dice, to be considered foul language - in game chat? idea:
I have a few ideas; giving out Bonus Medals -for da crybaby's...heck, I like medals. Who knows maybe I'd go for one of dem dare medals myself :-)
Any medal for quitting da game? If there were, at least players would have an excuse other than the usual bad (99%) excuse - dice. You've made a believer out of me...Please Cater to Da dice players...give em medals, I will assimilate!

I might not have the answers. Something should be done with such behavior.

I doubt that you will be able to convince your grognard friends to play the game just because the results of the dice are concealed.
Equally, the players that moan about probabilities and randomness won't be convinced either.

This is a very small proportion of people that would like or even use this option. I think it might just be you. And only over time probably prefer to go back to the die results being shown because they miss it, whether it's psychologically good for them or not.
Concealed dice would not change the game at all for most people's reasoning, and I think that's why it's a slightly baffling suggestion.

I would suggest to play more dice games to confront your fear - Can't Stop is an excellent game for this.

I'd appeal to their skill...No more dice.
Equally, the players that moan about probabilities and randomness won't be convinced either.
Have you ever tried to teach, somebody new to this game? Newbs always listen to the dice. they always know what to do because they believe the dice is their friend. Concealed Dice would be most useful in this respect. The beautiful dice would lure them in (into this game), and when they continually lose (because they are playing a game of dice) while getting frustrated...fighting the dice...show them something new. Take the dice out of there visual and they would be more apt to learn.
Equally, the players that moan about probabilities and randomness won't be convinced either.
That's just it. Winning a game doesn't speak of a player's skill and daring. There is no acknowledgment, not by players, not by score, not by medals...It's all about the dice.  Players get medals for rolling good dice...which should tell you something?
This is a very small proportion of people that would like or even use this option.
Do you know this for sure? who knows, it might take off. I'm bringing it up while it's still in Beta...I realize it's a long shot...timing is everything.
I think it might just be you. And only over time probably prefer to go back to the die results being shown because they miss it, whether it's psychologically good for them or not.
Good point. Making it an option would be the way to go 8-)

I don't pretend to have the Answers. It was a suggestion.
I think it might just be you
That might be - The same could be said for the rest of you...dice; all you see is dice...you are caught up in the spirit of the dice. The dice have taken over. I think it's time we subdue the dice?
I think it might just be you
I see it differently, I want other players to continually experience the excitement of the game; making brilliant moves, formulating a plan of attack...Volunteeringlee breaking units just to have them fall back. Protecting damaged units etc. The dice go contrary to everything a war game is about.

You might ask yourself; Why does a computer (war) game need dice? I can tell you the reason, and it has nothing to do with the mechanics of the game.
I would suggest to play more dice games to confront your fear
Like Memoir 44? that's just it, I'm weary of dice games and people who turn any and every game that has dice into a dice game. Believe you me, dice have no power...nothing to fear!

P.S. Any one of you, who posted a response, ever play Memoir 44?

This is a boardgame-site. Not a role-playing site ;)
Check out the Allround-League: https://boardgamearena.com/group?id=7870115 --> a league where you have matches of random games vs. other players in your group. Season 9 registration oct. '25.

I can't say that I fully understand your position, but hey ho..

If you can't convince the developer (Tisaac) You could probably use the Preference Advance settings to create some css styles to hide the dice.https://boardgamearena.com/preferences?section=advanced

Code: Select all

.m44-dice { visibility:hidden; }

Let's end this discussion here, now it's time to see whether enough players thinks like you or not. Just create a suggestion in the usual place (community > bugs/suggestion), and post a link to this thread in the suggestion report to let players decide whether they want to upvote it or not.
I will not implement a suggestion for Memoir44 without at very least a couple of upvotes.
