What is "interaction"?

Post by Jellby »

I wonder what "interaction" means in a game's description. I would guess it's a measure of how much the actions of other players may affect your own. But then a game like chess has interaction 0? Surely your play in chess is affected by what the other player does...

That's how I understand it.
But every developper chose the values for its game, so I guess Chess was wrongly set to 0.

Agreed and that just seems wrong for Chess.

I'm not sure.
In chess you don't have much interactions. What you do affect how the other player should play, but it doesn't affect him directly.

Checkers are at 0 too.
Battle of lits is at 2.

But you can literally capture the opponents pieces in chess or block their moves?

Quite different to say Yahtzee where you literally cannot interact with the opponent at all?

Chess is at interaction 0 because many people will just use computer engineered moves for it and not actually interact themselves..

I don't think any of the games with those ratings actually compare with other games at the same ratings, they're basically all arbitrary anyway, best way to know is to play the games yourself and make your own list of his interactive a game is

I don't think that's correct. Letter Tycoon also has Arena disabled because people were using engines but has interaction=1

Maybe interaction = 0 is just the default value and was not set properly? Namely, I think for complexity there is a default of 3 / 5, because I found many games on BGA with a complexity of 3 / 5 which is not appropriate (like Agricola, Great Western Trail, In the Year of the Dragon, Elfenland, Connect6). So very likely there is a default value for interaction as well.

Funny enough, you can't filter the games on BGA for "interaction" and if you filter them for "complexity", you won't find this x / 5-categories either

"Interaction" appears to be a bad translation. In the code, "interaction" is called "diplomacy."
Games that have no cooperative or negotiation aspect all have 0 "interaction."
Games that are heavy on cooperation, deals, and trading all have high "interaction" scores.
