idea: average thinking time metric

Post by gulligan »

I've only been on BGA for a little over a year but I LOVE THIS PLACE (despite what my profile says :-)

Although it is bad for my work productivity, I love playing turn-based games against other players that check in more than once per day.

Since BGA is already computing "thinking time", I would love to see a setting on turn-based games that limits participation with "average thinking time" (on turn-based games only). Or perhaps this is a metric available on player's profiles so that I can seek out like-minded opponents?

I definitely have not completely thought this through... I wonder if this has been discussed previously on the forums?

There already is a way to limit players based on thinking time in turn-based games.

Set the number of moves per day that are required.

This can range anywhere from 1 move per 2 days, to fast turn-based of 8 (16?) moves per day (with time to sleep where the clock is not moving).

This should simulate the feature you seem to be requesting, unless I am misunderstanding it.

This metric would definitely be nice to see on a players profile page. When joining a table you could check out the other players. I'm not sure there is a suggestion-bug open for this to upvote...

The 1 move-a-day time frame that can lead to very long 5 player games, however I know some players still use this but actually play very fast and just like to have the freedom sometimes of not ever going over-time. Which as a curtesy / mind-frame is understandable.

I think the concept has merit. The one issue with attempting to measure an average thinking time per player is for people who get interrupted while logged in. You will not measure the actual thinking time. You’ll be measuring thinking time plus however long they are away from the interface. I realize it is on me as player to manage this mostly. However if you get a critical phone call at your desk or an urgent Teams meeting that leaves you no time to close a browser you will have distorted times. This may not be a high incidence for most so I think it worth trying to ascertain this. I just note the issue.

If there’s some way to also measure the effectiveness of said thinking time, that would be amazing. The system tries to account for this a little.
