Arnhem Bridge

Post by Marzacco »

Just got finished beating my friend 7-6 in a pair of Arnhems in which the Germans (both of us) could not get across the bridge in strength "to save our lives". Anyone have a strategy for winning as the Germans? It seems all the US has to do it sit back in the towns and fire their big guns at anybody that ventures near them.

Truth be told... sometimes there are scenarios where one side simply has to get lucky to pull out a win.

This assymetry is ironed out by playing both sides, as you will know well.

That being said, i'll give it a try as well and come back with any notes ;)

I did manage to win with Axis finally!
Key is to try to link up with the 2 Axis unit deployed deep in the enemy side, and then work from that base.

The crossing is of course where the challenge is up, and any player worth their mettle will save up cards to strike at the end of the bridge.

But some unlucky rolls, and leaving a space between tanks as to not absorb hits, and the crossing can be made.

But no denying of course, this is a Allies favourite-heavy scenario in any case.

Haven't found too many opponents willing to play Arnhem Bridge on BGA and the Allies have won the two matches I was in. You are right about using the two Axis units deep in Allied territory, however.

I was able to win one out of three 'Steam' matches against the AI when the Allies came after me leaving their towns and had poor dice rolls. I think I saw the Allies are favored 80-20 on the M44 On-Line Steam version. Thanks for the help, PaskinsP.

You need combination of luck, dices and execution in timely manner.

First work with those two isolated units on the right.
Either hide them in the woods, watching for opponents elite units 2 move & shoot ability. Eliminate one of their elites (or two).
Or simply pull them down, at the bottom, far from cannons range, and in the 3 range of your tanks behind river.
Try to unpack units on the right, moving them in central area. Before that prepare central area, freeing the path for units from right.
Artillery should eliminate closest infantry unit.
Next, offensive in the left - try to eliminate allied infantry. At the same time prepare the center for assault. After elimination of allied infantry on the left, stick with one of yours to the left artillery. That should be done when you have positioned tank on the bridge on certain hex. That way assault in center should be free of left artillery, which should be occupied dealing with adjacent infantry. Tank should start assault positioned at the hex on the bridge from which he can exit the bridge and finish movement not adjacent to the central artillery. Or stick to the artillery if you attack using Armored Assault.

Its important to have cards like Armored Assault, Barrage and Their Finest Hour and timely use them.

Theres many other things that can be said about this scen., but anyhow, youll need much luck - cards and dices.

THANKS for the advice fellas. This scenario is still a hard one to conquer as the Germans - but it is doable against human veteran players. The keys seem to be having patience, building your hand, getting some good cards, and a bit of luck. Was able to defeat an old pro today with that formula as both Allies AND Axis. It is a challenge though and might take you more than half an hour.
