Like I wrote earlier, The Table Administrator should be given the option to expel any player who is a nuisance.

There should be an expel player button.

This solution already exists: when player is out of time you can kick his/her from the table.

Sorry, but kicking a player out does not solve this issue.

Players like this one should not be allowed to join tournaments in the first place.

This player is not the only one!

We are thinking of the following solution (work in progress):

- hard limit of +50 karma to join any public tournament
- automatic karma check on all public turn based tournaments, 24h before start: expel automatically all registered players that do not match anymore the karma requirement.
- limit total number of turn based tournaments you can register based on your number of turn based games played.

Feedback is welcome.

sourisdudesert, thank you for your response.

I personally think that the Karma should be set higher (75).

It's very easy to get round what you have proposed, all you have to do is play an x number of quick games so you don't get expelled from any tournaments you have registered for.

Would it be possible to, in addition to karma, have a "finish game without timer penalty" - percentage? Our profile already displays the number of games played in the past 2 months, as well as the number of games in which we have run over time. You can turn this into a certain percentage, and then tournament creators (or even table creators) can limit players based on their time-out percentage?

This would handle the particular case that inspired this thread, as a quick run of quick games to get high karma is still offset by this overall time-out percentage (one player of interest had 2205 timer penalties in 2796 recent games, so just playing about 100 games without a penalty (which would get them back to 100 karma) would still not be enough to meet any such threshold on time-out percentage.

This is a really good start. Awesomeness.

Can I also add that a tournament I'm currently playing has a very high level of timed-out games: Many people have left simply out of frustration that a game is unlikely to end. Most of the timing-out players hold a 100% (or near to 100%) karma.

Notice it's the same players timing out again and again, but don't voluntarily leave the tournament. From a rough estimate it seems like 25% - 50% of the games have timed-out.

It would be nice if players would be auto-kicked from the tournament if they time-out.

If a table times out, then the points result can be different. This also means that you can't quite tell, it's not just 1,1,1,4 from the tournament page, timed out games might as well be 1,2,3,4 and look like a normal result. Example of 2 games from the tournament:

https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=268137591

I believe Arena is also looking for some kind of a penalty if a player times-out too.

This sounds awesome. I love the aspect that the karma-check would be timed according to tournament-start and not to registration. So one would have to regain the karma for every single tournament which already would make it hard to keep going when you still have open tournament games. Of course one can still wait out all tournaments and then repeat the process, but the limited number of tournaments would help with that.

For total number of turn based games played maybe also (in addition?) do a ratio finished/unfinished. It's not like the player in the example hasn't finished any games in the past (maybe even turn-based). But he has ~6000 finished games. which surely is a lot. But has a total of ~13000 games (finished + unfinished).
Check out the Allround-League: https://boardgamearena.com/group?id=7870115 --> a league where you have matches of random games vs. other players in your group. Season 9 registration oct. '25.

This player only finishes games when he needs his Karma to be high enough to join tournaments or when he is playing with a friend.

I know exactly how he operates. I use to join the same daily tournaments as him.

Of these, item #1 would stop the more insidious players from joining every tournament, but most of these players seem to manage to join tourneys with a reputation restriction set into place as-is, so it probably isn't worth your effort relative to the likely small to nonexistent effect it would have.

#2 would actually address the problem, and while a more water-tight solution would be to do the expulsion at the start of the tournament, 24h might be an acceptable middle ground to allow for players who got hindered by real world hiccups and thus briefly fell under the reputation limit.

#3 would probably make absolutely zero difference of any kind. Unless what you mean is a total cap on tournaments+non-tournament turn based tables, in which case it would have to be a hard cap and not have some sort of dependency on number of games played. Edit for clarity: this would have a SMALL effect at most, but could maybe help limit the problem somewhat if you really are unwilling to look at any solution that would work.

As I believe others have suggested there are two tools that WOULD neatly address the issue, not listed amongst what you are working on:

First, tournament admins could get the ability to boot players from the tournament. Alternatively, extend the power of the red thumb to include inability to enter any tournament made by a player who gave you a red thumb (effectively equivalent effect).

Second, you could have players automatically booted from a tournament if their karma is ever 0%. On the assumption that the karma system actually works, this should neatly get rid of problem players.
