Rogues to Riches: is it possible to require voice chat?

Post by Tubbyland »

Hi folks,
I'm new to BGA studio and am keen to learn more.

Years ago I designed a family game called Rogues to Riches and I think it might be a good fit for BGA: it's got a simple ruleset, uncomplicated assets, and straightforward logic. Thing is, voice chat is required. Is that something that can be implemented? I'm think of games like Concept which are hugely improved with voice chat but don't strictly require it, and iirc the BGA implementation can be played without it.

The basic idea of Rogues is that you describe how you break into a thief's lair with the tool cards in your hand. There's no right or wrong answer, but the other players wither vote for you if they like your plan or vote for the defender of the lair if they don't. So it's vital that people can communicate with each other by voice.

If this is possible, is anyone interested in learning more or taking a crack at it? 8.3 out of 10 on BGG!

Cheers,
Sam

As you say, there are games on here where chat between players is more prevalent, but I don't think it's an absolute necessity. The games still work even without it. Like Concept, Similo, and Remember When and a lot of co-op games. But they still work none the less without chat.
It's possible for premium users (I think) to use the in-game voice chat, as well as other 3rd party face-time apps.
I would suggest you can program the game and leave it up to the users to communicate however.

Makes sense. I can be clear in the rules that voice chat is necessary, and encourage signing up for premium or using discord etc. Expectation management! I don't want players to get frustrated.

Factum is another example. It has a textbox for players to write a story, but I imagine people might prefer to use voice chat.

Interesting. Haven't heard of Factum, I'll check it out.
Cheers.
