I am not a huge fan of 'gg' and prefer 'thank you for the game'...

Since we don't seem to have a thumb's up or upvote option, I'm quoting this because it's my preferred statement as well so thanks for the post. I heartily appreciate everyone who enjoys their games ending the time spent with a brief thought, be it a longer phrase to type out or just 'gg'.

This is what I prefer as well.

Good game is an expression from sports that means far more than that the game was good. It means shaking hands and admitting defeat and is used to rise above childish expressions of sore losers that are so common in video games.

Maybe we can vote for adding a shaking hands emoji.

Exactly. 'gg' is not really saying the game was good, in the same way that people who say 'how are you today?' don't really care how you are. Its just a quick polite expression for saying 'thank you for playing this game with me, I enjoyed it'

Seriously. The way people interpret 'gg' like someone is spitting in their face is really a reflection on that person. As someone before said, would you just stand up and walk away wordless from a physical table at the end of the game? That kind of attitude would get you ostracized from an in-person gaming group, and I don't even want to play with someone like that online.

Just as I dislike people asking me how I am if they don't really want to hear the answer, so I dislike people saying GG when it doesn't actually mean the game was good.

Some people really like empty politenesses and call them etiquette. Some people really dislike them and prefer what they see as more honest communication. A lot depends on the culture in which you were raised. Maybe the GG-sayers could exercise a little more empathy/cultural awareness, instead of assuming those of us who do not say it are boorish sore losers.

"gg" is nice shorthand for "Thank you for the game." especially when there is no shared language between opponents. It makes more sense to think of it as a sign of respect and sportsmanship rather than a commentary on the quality of the play. The "gg" together could even look like a pair of hands performing a handshake! There is no reason to assume malice.

And if the opponent doesn't "gg" there is no reason to assume the opponent is being rude, either.
