Initial map setup illegal

Post by Pedros »

I have now played numereous games on BGA; in general I like it. However, the initial map is almost always illegal according to the rules. Almost always, there are three identical tiles adjacent to each other. I don't know whether there are any similar errors over 6s and 8s adjacent to each other; if so, I haven't yet noticed them. However, the first-mentioned fault unbalances the game and seems to give the first players an advantage (because later playes can less easily choose points relating to the repeated resoure tile

Sorry, but you do not know what the official rules about map generation is. Similar resource tiles can be next to each other. No rule about that.

Also, being next to several of the same resource is not as good as having a diversified income.

You must be playing games with the option “Variable setup with random numbers”. This ignores the usual “spiral” setup and allows adjacent doubles (except 6/8). Change it to “Variable setup” and you’ll get the original spiral back - no doubles.

This isn’t very clear in the BGA rules, to be fair. I discovered it through trial and error.

Non-spiral, with doubles, isn’t “illegal”, just not recommended. Some players like the additional variety, but it does tend to unbalance the base game and in most cases isn’t used in tournament play.

Well maybe what they are talking about is the fact that two tiles with 9 are touching each other? Colonist.io comp. And Catan Universe never have 2 hexes with the same number touching. 9 and 5 are fine but 9 and 9 make for terrible number diversification

per rules it is not a forbidden setup - just touching red numbers(6,8) would be. (because of too op spots, to whomever gets that)
