Matchmaking in Arena Mode takes forever, so people often accidentally leave the page without canceling 'looking for players'. Very rarely does BGA correctly identify a player as not present for an arena game, especially for mobile players who switched apps. I was many times a victim to this bug and have been in many games where a player or two are afk.
To fix this, we can have players manually accept the arena game just as you do regular games, but without showing your upcoming opponents. This has been a known, obvious solution forever but BGA chooses not to implement it for some reason. However, if we as a community were not such * to each other, this wouldn't be a problem in the first place.
In my opinion it's not the afk player's fault, it's BGA's fault that he is not here but BGA decided to start a game without him. Whenever I'm in an arena game and someone is afk on turn 1, I try to get everyone to agree to abandon the game instead of expelling the player. Not only is it a nice thing to do, but also no one gets any points for being a 'winner' by expelling, since the game has 0% progression. I really wish everyone would start abandoning instead of expelling in arena games where the player is obviously not here, but in the past when I was afk that has not been done for me a single time.
