Unless I'm mistaken, if someone is skipped due to timeout the rankings of who advances in an elimination are based on account age. So I dont think the current state is (C-random). A lot of tournaments have players that timeout. Getting rid of it the skip function does prevent abuse but it would also leave games in limbo if a player never goes wouldn't it?
Timeouts and elimination tournaments: potential solutions
Re: Timeouts and elimination tournaments: potential solutions
I find it depends on the game. Some games us a tally of your available resources, some use how much time you have left, in Potion Explosion ties are decided with a marble draw.Looper334 wrote: ↑30 August 2022, 01:59 Unless I'm mistaken, if someone is skipped due to timeout the rankings of who advances in an elimination are based on account age. I *might* be confusing general ties here, but these are examples of the ways things have been resolved for me in games. I have never lost due to someone else being on BGA longer

Tournament advancement and game tie breakers do not work the same way.

If the game finishes in a normal ending, the game tiebreakers are used. For example, in 7 Wonders, coins are the tiebreaker.
If the game is abandoned due to someone getting kicked for running out of time, the game tiebreakers are not used. This is the scenario OP was complaining about. If someone runs out of time in a "2 of 4 multiplayer elimination" tournament, two of the remaining three players are randomly picked to advance. That can be unfair if you were ahead, or if the game never happened because someone was absent.

I don't think ive ever been/seen it be just random for who advances. Usually everyone scores as if they all got 1st but it moves on based on account age. I.e if I opened my account a week before yours, I am guaranteed to advance if someone times out and it skipped.FSKFSK wrote: ↑02 September 2022, 15:58 >

Re: Timeouts and elimination tournaments: potential solutions
I'll have to see if account age is used as the tiebreaker the next time it happens.
Re: Timeouts and elimination tournaments: potential solutions
My Lucky Numbers tournament just ended due to one player timing out and here is the exact quote on who won: "Game abandoned
The game was abandoned automatically because the players did not manage to finish it before the next round of the tournament. The player with the most remaining thinking time wins the game."
This was with the Swiss System Tournament.
If the OP does not like the format of the tournament they were in, the answer is to start your own using different parameters. Obviously a Swiss Style will use remaining time as the deciding factor.

Re: Timeouts and elimination tournaments: potential solutions
The discussion was about how it is decided which tied players advance to the next round in tournaments with elimination. So the tiebreaking for Swiss system tournaments where everyone advances to the next round is not really relevant.JoysJoy wrote: ↑11 September 2022, 23:33 My Lucky Numbers tournament just ended due to one player timing out and here is the exact quote on who won: "Game abandoned

Actually, here is the first sentence on this thread:GeraldineMerida wrote: ↑12 September 2022, 03:08

So my comment on how another type of tournament may suit OP better is a good response. And my comment was not about tie-breaking but dealing with timeouts, which is the original topic of this thread, and I said nothing about moving forward in tie-breaking Swiss Rounds. Not sure why you thought otherwise?Lord Satri wrote: ↑17 August 2022, 22:37 Hi BGA community,
I love BGA immensely, however, one of my biggest complain about tournaments is how timeouts are handled, especially in elimination tournaments.
My comment is that OP could start his own tournaments using another type to get different options for timeouts. The title is clearly asking for solutions to the OP's frustration. And the answer could be to start their own tournaments and avoid the elimination system altogether.
