Option of playing 'Best of x' for tournaments

Post by Sysyphus »

Hello,

I saw that Cribbage had the option of playing series of games like a best of 3, best of 5 or best of 7.

Best of 7 was the the format of choice for our Knock-out tournament on the DoW app. Best of 9 for finals.

We also used a best of 6 for some leagues, to give an even number of games between players for Round Robin encounters with ties allowed.

Each format would automatically apply the alternate start to make logistics easier.

I understood it was not possible for Arena, but if we could have this for tournaments that would be great!

Thanks!

I was going to said that Cribbage was a short game (15min) and Ticket to Ride a long one (18 min) but apparently it's false.

Lucky numbers, Love letters, Lost cities, Reflection, Dingo's dream have a way to choose the number of rounds of a game. And since I know only half the game, there should be around 10/20 games with that option.

Problem is that it doesn't look great for Ticket to Ride, it's a big game, and doing 2/3 rounds doesn't look to do anything great.

And about tournaments, that doesn't look possible except if you add an option to the game. But then there should be an option for most games under 20min, which causes others problems: many players don't read the option of the game (esp those from automatic lobby, esp on popular games). So if someone want to play one game and saw after 20min that he need to play 2 more games, that doesn't seem great.
Problem is that you got a rematch which already do that.
So I suppose the 'problem' if there is one would be to create a more competitive format of tournament, but that's a big suggestion.

The difference between TTR and Lost cities (one of the example of games with a BO3) is that TTR never mention BO3 in the rules, while Lost cities does. The adaptations on BGA try to follow the rulebook as much as possible, so if the physical don't speak about it (and the app doesn't either) there is no reason to have it on BGA implementation.
At least not for simple/arena games. For tournaments, it could be an option, but it would need BGA team to do modifications on tournament system (nothing special to TTR for that)

TTR World championship (RIP) was played on best of 3, and that was organized by Days of Wonder itself. It was not the ideal format for competitive but it was at least something.

I only talk of implementing 'a best of' format option for 2 player tournaments. For multiplayers, a single game in a Swiss system or a Round Robin is the way to go. For 2 players, we need more games to establish hierarchy, especially between top players, in the same spirit as Chess. (Just spirit, no comparison beyond that ;) ).

A 2 player game lasts 5 minutes, a best of 5 should last less than 30 minutes. A 6-game set format, idéal for leagues, round robin or Swiss, would last 30 minutes. It could indeed last up to 1 hour + for heavy competition but we are still short of 4-player complex game timewise.
