Arena ridiculous board sizes

Post by MarkSteere »

How about using the board size that the developer has, for good reason, selected as the default size? The size that almost everyone is using. Not the dinky, ultra beginner, tiny toy size that almost nobody is using. This is not the "competition" size. Hello??

You should tell the Arena default setting while requesting stable release or the admin might set it wrong.

The developer doesn't decide the board sizes, the gurus do that, meaning the active player base.

I don't know what game is being discussed,; but for example for a game as Connect 4, they purposely choose a different board size to avoid the usage of Solvers, which is a form of cheating.

Dev are automatically gurus of their own games.
So dev can check what is voted, and write in group what they wish, and vote for it. Did you check that before complaining about gurus vote?

Does it even make sense to have a game like Connect 4, that has been solved? That's the same reason chess isn't taken seriously here. People can just let a computer play for them, and preventing cheating is too much effort.

@FSKFSK :

Ranked Connect 4 here is on sizes which - as far as is publicly known - have not been solved, rather than on the usual size.

FYI, if you want someone to get a notification that you are specifically responding to them (instead of generally to a thread they've subscribed to or bookmarked), @ doesn't work. Quoting them does by default, although it can be disabled.

They can decide the initial Arena setting though. The poster is the designer and the publisher of the game in question.
Also, as mentioned above developers are gurus of their own games.

Connect 4 dev here. Arena mode uses different opening rules and board sizes to prevent easily accessible 6x7 online solver uses.
Also, the game doesn't have to be solved to build an engine. Chess is not a solved game.

Hi guys. Thanks for the information. The games in question were Diablo and Herd. I've requested board size changes in Gurus.

This notion of a game being somehow tarnished by being "solved" is a meme that's been around for years and which is apparently not going away any time soon. A powerful computer solving a game is ******* irrelevant. A good AI can beat you at any game, solved or unsolved. So why does it matter??
