Existing Memoir 44 Online tournaments : A Thread

Hello guys ! Memoir 44 will soon be officially out on BGA and existing tournament on DoW will slowly but surely come out on this platform. Main problem of our current tournaments : we use a special scoring system on most of them, so we will not use BGA tournament system for these ones.

Now a quick recap on the current M44 Online Tournament :

- COOL : Annual league organized by the French Federation of Memoir 44 (FFM44). Players are divided into pools of 12 players in four differents league (Rookie = level 4, Challenger = Level 3, Perfection = Level 2 and Excellence = Level 1). Each player plays 11 matchs, top players from each pools are promoted to the next league, bottom players are relegated.

- League : Tournament organized by Sam1812 on BoardGameGeek, three seasons per year. Players are divided into pools of six players, top 8 making it to the playoff. Ranking is made by the number of wins, not of medals.

- WOLF/BEWOLF : Annual tournament, one match each month from January to November. Scenarios from there are a bit special, no historical scenarios, always 8 medals to win and 6 cards to each side.

- WW : 1 tournament per year. Was created when the game went online 11 years ago. The winner from the previous edition become the organizer for the next one. He is allowed to choose : the scenarios, the format, how many players will be playing..

- Formula 1 : 1 seasons per year, 7 scenarios per season. Players will be drawed into teams of three. Each scenario represent a race, each player plays 4 game on the scenario, giving him an amount of medals and figures. More points are given for the best scorers,. At the end of the season, the player with the most point is crowned best pilot and the team with the most points is crowned best F1 team.

- A 2 c'est Mieux (A2CM - Better Together) : A tournament in duo. Each member of the duo plays a single map and one part of the double map (a one way game). Will come back in 2024.



Each year, 16 winners of Online and In Real Life tournamentS battle in the Champion's Trophy, where the winner is crowned champion of champions. As decided with the two main organisers, BGA tournaments will not be allowed any spot to the Champions Trophy for now. We hope that BGA players will join in our existing tournament sphere rather than creating a new one via BGA.

It sounds quite interesting, and from your explanation, one can well imagine that these past 11 years the french m44 community was having a lot of fun creating and adapting those 6 formats!!!

But then on the other hand... myself, and I would imagine quite a few people here on BGA have just now discovered (in my case re-discovered) their love for m44.
I basically only play m44 here, and it was the reason I went premium in a heartbeat.
Me and my gaming group went all in and puchased a truckload of m44 material to also play face to face in fact

I'm excited for m44 leaving beta and for the Arena season and tournaments to start.

I would very much wish for them to be straight forward, with the game in mind.
The 6 formats you comments... sound fun, but a bit overcomplicated and the product of a closed community.

I would wager that the best way forward, is to use this opportunity to open up m44 competition to as many people as possible!
And to unify all activity here on BGA, in an official format, instead of several branches.

Tournaments are organized by player from France, the US, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands, pretty international roster.

The point of this thread is to explain that these already existing tournament will leave the Dow platform and come to BGA and we will be open to welcome any new player in our midst.

The problem with BGA tournament is that it can be made by anyone, with maps from the base box, with a lot of awful and uninteresting scenarios. These are really not interesting in terms of competition.

If i'm not mistaken, having tournaments with specific map-pools can easily be done.

The question is why maintain 6 slightly different formats?
I understand it might have had sense in the past.

The idea of tournament play is to determine the best at a competition.
Why not make a singular only category... a Gold Discipline?

Going over the 6 formats you comment:

- COOL: sounds like what Arena will be. Only that ranking has to be re-established from scratch.

- League: seems a classic tournament. But the divisions, once m44 hits the big public, seem to be obsolete.

- Beowulf: that indeed seems difficult to implement, being house made scenarios I understand.

- WW: Seems Duplicate. And only once a year frequency seems odd, if BGA hopefully amplifies the playerbase of m44.

- F1: sounds fun. But unnecesary "rule-y". Why have such a format? A tournament should be more straight forward.

- A2CM: personally.... I'm absolutely No fan of "clan" or "guild" play.
This scares new players away, and is very closed-group-minded, a bit elitist.
M44 is a 1vs1 game, unless we speak of Overlord (named epic in other C&C titles)

Our differents tournaments are here to give a bit of structure to our tournaments while being different from one to the other. I'm sorry but arena mode and the fact that tournament can be created by pretty much anyone on BGA doesn't give much worth to these competitions. But if this is how you want to play Memoir, go on ! As long as everyone is happy, i'm just trying to say that there are new tournaments with skillful players and organizers that will soon come on the platform


We have a few teenagers (12 to 18 yo) in our competitions. I don't think they are so hard to understand.
