Turn based tournament penalty not very effective

Post by calvinthegreat »

I recently played a Takenoko Tournament we each had 3 days (4) players to finish the game 1 player ran out of time by 15 hours and the game was only 75 percent done so I decided to skip player. Usually I never skip but this player was taking 24 hour between some turns and it was dreadful. After the game was over I decided to check out his karma rating and it was at 96%! I looked into more details and he was playing like 50 turn based games currently and had been kicked from like 4 ganes in the past 7 days due to over time infractions. I guess my question why is the the karma loss so low for turn based games vs Real time? And has anyone actually ever reached below 65 karma on a -4 per game penalty?

It's not low for turn-based games, it's low for missed tournament games (https://boardgamearena.com/faq?anchor=f ... reputation):
  • Each time you finish a game, if your clock has never been negative during this game, you get +1☯.
  • If you quit, or get kicked out of a game in progress, you lose 10☯ or even 20☯ if you already quit another game recently.
  • If you miss out on a planned tournament game: -4☯.

But only if someone skips your turn. You receive no penalty at all when the table times out (gets abandonnend because max time for the game is reached) even if you're the only one on the table deep in the negative...

Apparently for some reason tournament-time-offense is considered a less severe offense by the system then doing it in normal game (or missing game-start in arena) ;)...
Check out the Allround-League: https://boardgamearena.com/group?id=7870115 --> a league where you have matches of random games vs. other players in your group. Season 9 registration oct. '25.

Bumping this thread… I play in a tournament series in which at least one player regularly makes the calculated decision to abandon games as soon as it is clear he is in a losing position. 4 karma as the penalty is so negligible/recovered so quickly that he would rather grief his opponents and minimize ELO loss with a partially completed game.

This lower penalty also enables known problem tournament players who go through a cycle of registering for hundreds of tournaments when their karma is high and abandon them all. There is no reason abandoning tournament games should be a lesser penalty than arena mode- since it affects more players by damaging the integrity of the whole tournament, not just an individual game, it should be more.
