Games getting timed-out.

I understand that tournament games have to be time-limited to move the tournament forward,so that if the players don't time each other out for going over the limit,the system eventually will.However,sometimes slow players are definitely still participating.So would it not be possible to say 'ok,this is the result for tournament purposes,but you can continue your game' ?

I cannot stand the fact that in a competitive game an opponent can just announce 'you are playing too slow, I win'.

I understand that a maximum game length has to exist and when that time has past it only makes sense to punish the player who took the most time, however doing so mid game is just punitive.

Many might say that in the real world (Chess, for example) players have a clock that they must maintain and taking too much time thinking will cost you the game. However to carry that logic over to a turn based game being played over days is nonsenical, only a fool would assume everyone is spending all the time between moves thinking of what to do. In reality we have lives, work/education to be getting on with. Yes some people are always going to be playing slowly but over the timespan of a tournament we all encounter times where we have less free time than usual.

Furthermore the time out system has a geographical bias in that if you are to the West of your opponent you are likely to sleep after them meaning that it is more likely that you will make the last move for some time whilst you both sleep. Meaning that they are taking an arbitrary hit to their remaining time every day.

Too many people use the clock to preserve an Elo rating or as a saving grace. This should not be rewarded.

If you really really had to have a way to stop a game with an inactive player then give that ability to the tournament administrator, not the person who would benefit the most from such a decision.

I'm new to the arena/forum and evaluating whether I want to sign up or not but am now leaning not because of being hit by Bad Karma's whenever the game glitches and I can't make a move, followed but a minor nastygram about abandoning a game.

There has to be a time limit. Otherwise, the game can take forever and hold up the rest of the tournament.

There should be a Fisher Clock option for tournaments, especially for games that can last a variable length of time. (Fisher Clock means that you get +8 hours or whatever every time you take a move, with a maximum bank of 2 days.)

People shouldn't sign up for games they can't comfortably play within the time limit. It isn't that hard to set up BGA on your cell phone and check if it's your turn during breaks at lunch and other times.

What I don't like is when someone gets kicked for running out of time when a game is 80%+ finished and it's obvious who's going to win. If you're losing and someone else runs out of time, the "smart" thing to do is to kick them so you get a tie instead of last.

It's quite hard to estimate how long a turn based game is going to take, with possibly variable amount of turns and non matching time zones. Move per certain time would be a nice option, even if it would slow down. Comparing turn based/correspondence to live game is not so good comparison either.

Also, I didn't understand why I was late when I'm on BGA all the time (during the day). I am addicted, which annoys my man.

Some people use this delay to kick us out when they lose!
It should not be possible for players to kick someone out, this should be the role of the tournament administrators.
