Outdated browser warning

Post by Nicholas_M »

Hey all! I use Board Game Arena a lot on my phone, and I recently started seeing this warning message when I log in:

Screenshot_20221205-130725_Chrome.jpg (395.9 KiB) Viewed 577 times
The UI doesn't quite match up with the rest of the BGA interface, and the "update browser" link took me to a website that looked a little vague and sketchy (it showed icons for 4 different web browsers instead of anything specific to Chrome, which made me weirdly paranoid). I thought it was going to take me to the Google play store to update my browser version, so I immediately closed the dodgy looking tab and checked on Google play where it shows that Chrome is apparently up-to-date.

I'm wondering if someone can confirm that this is a legit warning added by BGA devs, and I'm just being paranoid? Or is this possibly cause for concern?

I've never seen this warning. Admittedly I just checked and I'm on version 108, but Chrome releases are so close together I very much doubt there's been a vulnerability in 107 that's so serious that BGA would have already put this specific warning in place.

Since you said the button opened a dodgy-looking tab, this sounds like a security exploit of some kind that is nothing to do with BGA. Perhaps malware on your PC? The only thing that makes me unsure about that is the message specifically saying BGA - although if it's unrelated malware trying to guess the name of the site (which isn't hard) I would have thought it more likely to choose "board game arena" rather than the abbreviation. Really don't know, but I'd be *very* surprised if this was a legitimate warning from BGA devs. Particularly as there's been no forum announcement about it.

I got the same thing today. The dodgy looking site is actually browser-update.org which is legit despite looking dodgy.

I also got this recently in the app. I didn't click anything and when I refreshed a bit later, it went away. But it did strike me as odd when I don't believe my phone's browser version would affect the app, so therefore it's not within my control to update it.

I really don't like this "feature". It looks like a spam or malware site, even if it is legit. And it is incorrect. My browser is up to date, it just seems biased against Chrome. Either way I do not like BGA redirecting me to this outside site. If you need to post a warning that my browser needs updating, fine, but I will update it myself and don't want to be pushed to another provider.

This feature exists for years, and is useful because you really need to have an up to date browser to play on BGA.

However, recently, there have been an important security breach on Chrome and this is why this banner was appearing more often and even for recent browser (read: https://www.forbes.com/sites/daveywinde ... e29532364c).

We make this feature more "tolerant" today, so it should not appear anymore except if your browser is very old. However, considering the security breach on Chrome, we encourage you to upgrade your browser to the latest version.
