I agree that this change is bad.
Being able to play with my actual, knew-from-live-interaction friends around the world is one of my favorite things.
Limiting it to "my friends" seemed to work perfectly well, and games time out eventually.
I'm a 10-year member, and I almost never post, but I came to the discussions just to see what people were thinking.
Maybe make it a feature for premium members?

It's veray easy: Why don't you listen to your customers wishes but think, what you (BGA) think is the best? The discussion here shows, that there are at least two opinions: yours and the players one but only yours seems to be decisive. Think about it.

Like most people in this thread have already posted. This seems to be a very one sided decision.

Based on the reply we have seen from BGA I believe this is solvable situation with just allowing the old no-time limit option to tables that are restricted for friends only. I believe there's very little people (if any) "trapped" in a no-time limit game with friends... Therefore, allowing this option to exist under that restriction, should solve both problems.

I hope this gets fixed

The number of players posting for the first time in the forum on this topic is particularly impressive, showing how this bad decision is intensely felt by the players, sometimes questioning their will to continue playing on this site...

Besides, I've read all the posts of this topic and for the moment it seems to me to have counted "5 For" and "98 Against" the change... (In fact... 99 including this one ;))

Precisely and this feature already exists.
From the FAQ: A turn-based table is closed automatically if no move has been made in 40 days.
I feel the problem was when no time limit tables were created as real-time which could prevent players from joining other real-time tables if someone is spitefully refusing to move (hence the use of the word "trapped"). The problem should be alleviated if no time limit is restricted to only turn-based tables.

This is obviously a requested feature, based on the fact that we are still talking about it.

Would it be possible to bring back the feature, and have a group of people (many on here) that are able to interact and discuss how to make the change you were looking at better?

I'd like to be able to turn off the sound effects of the timer, whilst retaining the other in-game sound effects. That loud ticking clock sound is incredibly annoying and distracting when you've just about thought through your move, such that you can lose your train of thought, and have to start again.
Silene wrote: 15 December 2022, 21:11 I think it should be possible to ... get used to the red clock.
Jellby wrote: 15 December 2022, 21:36 Another option could be hide my clock. Those who are bugged by the red clock could just use that option and keep going.
You both obviously play without sound (or there is a way, of which I'm unaware, to disable the timer sound without disabling other game sounds).
There are 13 customizable sounds, one of them being "Clock negative alarm" which you can set to "no sound" if you desire.

Click on your avatar in the upper right. Click on the rightmost tab (the one that looks like equalizer sliders). Click on "Preferences." Select the "Sound" tab.

You could upvote bug https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=77775 which has not yet been closed as 'notabug' (as opposed to the 4 others previously referenced in this thread at https://boardgamearena.com/forum/viewto ... 41#p129041).

Adding my voice to the request to bring back the option for:
Turn Based + Normal + Play with friends + No time limit

This seems to be overwhelmingly what your user-base wants. Please make this option available again.

It is really hard to understand for me that you guys are so focused on Elo when you play untimed games with your friends.

I think this is much better if you often play against the same people: (Personal profile page -> Played games -> Game history)
https://boardgamearena.com/gamestats?pl ... finished=0

The stats there include training games, you can filter for specific friends and games and even by date.
