karma and the stupid red thumb (again)

Post by CharlieReddog »

Yet again I come to BGA to discover the wonderful "oops, you got another red thumb" message, and discover that my karma has suddenly ended up at 30%, despite IIRC being at 97% when I was last on. What makes it all the more frustrating and annoying, is that apparently this red thumb was received for the aggressive/insulting chat related reason. That's pretty impressive, since I don't think I've typed anything IN the chat for the past 2 months pretty much, and certainly not in the last week or so.

It's all well and good having a karma system and I applaud the idea. However the implementation of it is utterly flawed to the point it makes it pointless. There is absolutely no incentive to give a green thumb to anyone so no one does (except to amass enough red thumbs to give out!) which is a bloody stupid system and one that once fallen foul of (rightly or wrongly), you cannot possibly recover from.

It should be absolutely impossible to give a red thumb that affects someone else's karma unless the reason is for;
chat infringements - and they have ACTUALLY used the chat (preferably for more than 2 characters "gg" being the most insulting phrase ever right!?)
playing too slowly - their play ACTUALLY was slow - average turn length below that of the rest of the players by 25% or more

kingmaking and other reasons should be reported via the report system and shouldn't be just accused, but proved.
Quiting/disconnecting is already penalised by cumulative penalties so why punish someone twice?

The inability to combat this, or to appeal it in any way besides the existence of such a stupid system is the primary reason I won't be renewing my membership.

How do you know the red thumb was because of that?

Unless it was a Guilty Report, which does not automatically equal a red thumb.

Well, I don't know for sure, but that's what the message on screen said. I wasn't guilty of any of the valid reasons for giving a red thumb which is more the point.

You have bad Karma because you've got 4 timeout penalties in the last 60 days.

Timing out doesn't result in a karma penalty. It just results in a notation on your profile. Being expelled after timing out penalizes your karma.
