I agree with Magnus that tips can be very useful to a new player who doesn't have the knowledge of the tactics and strategy yet. As they play and learn and gain experience, then they are in a better place to engage in a conversation on tactics, but it does take a decent amount of games to get there!
I feel that most tips and general strategies have their exceptions and I probably have broken them all (sometimes it worked out and sometimes it didn't
). Sometimes you have to "break the rules", play with your "gut feeling" and do the unexpected to keep your opponent guessing (especially the very experienced ones). I really enjoy the conversations after a game that offered interesting strategy and tactical choices and trying to understand why players do what they do!
