Adding or removing scenarios from ARENA

Post by MagnusNygaard »

I know, we've had this discussion before... But maybe if we start in good time.

I'm strongly in favor of removing some of the most random and/or not-fun maps from the ARENA rotation.

"Mere St.Eglise" is an excellent example of a map that can be completely decided by luck BEFORE ANY MOVE HAS BEEN MADE!
"1st Armored to the Rescue" - to mention just one of the horrible desert scenarios - is another one where there's a not insubstantial chance that everything is decided before the second player even get to move a single unit.

So, is there a way we could make a poll of the maps we really do not like for Arena?

In the same vein, it would be nice to know if there's any chance we can add more scenarios to the pool - especially the "lost 28" scenarios that were already included on the soon to be defunct Memoir 44 Online.
Again, anything we can do to help test or troubleshoot - let us know, dear developers.

The initial move should - imho - be adding more scenarios to Arena play.

I seem to get a selection of about 6 scenarios in Arena play with an occasional "different" scenario.
I know scenarios are (meant to be) randomly selected for Arena play but it doesn't seem to be random for me.

If there were more scenarios then I might not get one of my usual six.
Then we can discuss which scenarios to remove.

And yes I've had plenty of scenarios where the scenario and my opponents great cards and exceptional die rolls have left me dead and buried, unable to offer a reasonable battle. Yes I don't like it, unless I'm the one with those cards and dice. That's not a reason to ban scenarios.

What frustrates me most is that one can lose a lot of Arena points/medals when one loses a battle that one simply could not effectively play.

As it seems the developers are not able to add more scenarios, they did ask us about removing some from Arena which they decided not to do since only a small percentage of M44 players made any comments which hopefully will change sometime in the future.

I think most of the hardcore players play Arena for status and points first and fun second... A concept that not all players see as important, but a lot of players do that's why they play Arena to see who's Top Dog and Regular play can be for casual gamers

Could you list the 28 scenarios and for each of them the currently missing features that would need to be implemented before adding the scenarios ? That would help us to see the big picture and where to focus on.

I know, we've had this discussion before... But maybe if we start in good time.
The last post had players listing too many Scenarios for removal. I'm sure we can all come together and decide on maybe two Scenario's that should be removed? If not able to remove from Arena, would it be possible to remove them from the base Game...being that everybody chooses Random!

Avec plaisir :)

I miscounted, there are only 27 - sorry.
There are only a few that have any rules not already implemented - most are straight forward. I don't have time to find the scenario numbers on DoW - but if that would help I can do that later.

They are:
1) Operation Spring - no special rules
2) Gold Beach - - no special rules
3) Utah Beach - no special rules
4) Juno Beach - no special rules
5) Carentan Causeway - no special rules
6) Operation Goodwood - no special rules
7) Twin Villages - no special rules
8) Counter Attack at Aras - no special rules BUT the units on the map should all be British Commonwealth units.
9) Vaumicel Manor - no special rules
10) Carentan - no special rules
11) Battle for Hill 178 - no special rules (fordable streams and minefields both work, IIRC)
12) Bretel Wood - Night Attack rules (which also work)
13) Forêt d'Ecouves - no special rules (but it's not mentioned in the description that ALL allied infantry are special forces)
14) Bastogne Corridor West - no special rules
15) Bastogne Corridor East - Artillery Deck used (but that also works, IIRC)
16) Strasbourg - ONE of the rivers is frozen solid and do not count in any way other than cosmetic (i.e. it is NOT a Frozen river in the sense of the rules).
17) Moyland Wood - no special rules
18) Bloody Ridge - no special rules
19) Clearing Matanikau River - no special rules Note that in the scenario map the EXIT markers are just ordinary victory medals.
20) Battle of Kalatch - no special rules
21) Battle of Warsaw - no special rules
22) Mignano Monte Lungo - no special rules
23) Tunesia - Allied Armor can only move 2 hexes - but the North African Rules are not in effect (this was made before the Mediterranean expansion was made)
24) Gallabat and Metemma - no special rules
25) Russian Breakout - no special rules
26) Lipovec - no special rules
27) Rzhev - Allied armor may only move 2 hexes - but BLITZ rules are NOT in effect.

Thanks a lot, looks like we could add some of them without too much extra work. It would be really great if you extract the scenario ids, that would definitively help, thanks !

OK, so turns out I have to know what's best for you to get, @Tisaac - because for Operation Goodwood (to take an example) there is the ID# 9579 (which I had to find through the list of scenarios here on BGA) but that has no map layout, the webpage from Daysofwonder with the scenario which exists in two versions https://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44/e ... w/?id=3701 and https://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44/e ... view/?id=9 but neither of those have an ID#.
Alternatively I could make an m44 file in the editor of each of the maps for you and just send them via email.

Let me know what's easiest for you.
