I'll add some additional perspective.
Clearly there's a problem with the ELO system with Hanabi, because there are WAY too many people with inflated ELOs. No one is happy about it.
How did it get this way? It's some combination of...
- Players who cheat by abandoning every game where they won't get a 30.
- Players who fluff their ELO via playing tons of 2p games
- Players who fluff their ELO via playing easier versions of Hanabi (basic, tricky, and/or no black powder.)
It's not clear to me which of the above is the biggest reason, but I can tell you that I busted my butt starting from zero, learning the game, playing more and more difficult versions, and in the past year or two playing 5p almost exclusively. And now I'm pretty highly rated with ELO, I start masters-only games, and I keep running into players that don't know some pretty basic concepts. And oh btw, some of the better players have been discussing this and tend to agree that the difference between a fairly-rated 700 and 1000 ELO player is about as big as the difference between a 400 and 700 player, even though ALL of the former are ELO masters. So the assertion that once you get to 500 they're all the same is comical.
I RT a ton of players (seriously, I wish I could see this list because it's insane) because I don't think they belong at the masters level in Hanabi and it's not fun playing with them. (This is a little unfortunate because I am sure they are players I would be perfectly happy playing games other than Hanabi with...)
I cannot make my games any more restrictive than I already do unless I made them invitation-only.
So I do get stuck in games far more frequently than I'd like. I don't like to abandon, and I don't do it because of "mistakes." But when it's clear that we're playing a convention-based team game and there are players at the table who are playing a different game than I am, yeah I'll consider it. FWIW I just checked and similar to Travis I used to abandon more, so I'm at around 20% overall but this calendar year I'm under 9% in just under 160 games. Still too many for my tastes and I can't go back and justify every one, but I'm far from a serial abandoner, and I've taken plenty of lumps when games didn't go my way. I have never once abandoned a game because the deck was too difficult or we were approaching the end and weren't going to get a 30.
Would getting rid of Abandons potentially help my situation some as everyone's ELO took more of a hit (myself as well as all the folks who don't belong?) Perhaps eventually the wheat would be separated from the chaff.
I'd really like for them to track separate ELO for 2p/3p and 4p/5p games. I have yet to find a competent master who plays mostly 2p, yet they get to join my games and unless I RT them all INDIVIDUALLY I'm out of luck. That's a lot of pain to have to absorb as I meet them and dole out the RT's one at a time.
