As a programmer, this seems to be an easy fix -- but a lot hinges on the site coding and any complications that presents.
A player should ALWAYS be able to see their game with their chosen color preference (when it's included in the game -- Patchwork for example only (sadly) has two set colors).
Normally I play blue (the best of all colors of course -- kidding!) and 95% of the time I get it. But for now I'm in a Carcassonne game where the other player preferred blue as well and they won out. So they get blue and I get green. As this is a turn-based (vs. real time) game, this is going to mess me up down the road. I'll close off a castle that belongs to them, because I will instinctively look for blue -- without remembering that I'm green (and yes, it's on the scoring panel, but I said "instinct").
But for the game we're playing, I don't see why I cannot see myself as blue and the opponent as green/red/purple. And he sees himself as blue and me as green/red/purple. What colors are shown on-screen to each player is irrelevant (or should be) to the outcome of the game. We're still "player 1" and "player 2", etc... For Can't Stop for example, I see a different game board than the other players (unless this picked that one too).
So why can we not see our chosen color on our own screens?
