Can't start a game because of one person - gamke start screen

Post by Boomai »

as per discussed in the topic linked below, 3 years ago, and nothing has been implemented yet:

one player being AFK at queue can make BGA starting a game screen unbearable.
sometimes the table takes a long time to open and has to be created again from scratch because there is no timer on the accept buttom (15-30 seconds?) and no option to kick the AFK player

BGA is volunteer driven so things get done when/ if volunteers get to it. Many things have been reported for years. You can accept things and enjoy what you can or find somewhere else to play. It is what it is.

It is also allowed to try and push what should be prioritized. Of course you should be extra tolerant and greatful.

But just " accept things and enjoy what you can or find somewhere else to play" is not a good option. I would take it so far that it's actually a bad behaviour. If people do things like that the few that don't will be to powerful and the world will be a bad place. Yes I am exaggerating this specific case. Just want to show the problems with that argument and attitude.

I don't think that's the case. It is for many games, developed by volunteers, but the core BGA functionality (forums, lobby, accounts, moderation policy, etc.) is handled by BGA employees, not volunteers.

how does your reply and attitude help?
feedback is necessary for growth, be it in a household or corporation.
If someones attitude towards productive criticism is "tis what it is" there is no point in making it, and thus the virtuous cycle stops.
i am assuming you do not speak for BGA's staff and considering previous responses i am sure you do not speak for the community, so i will keep on poiting what can be changed for the better.

Well, how far does that get you? I work hard to change things within my control. The best you can do here is write the code your own self. What good does complaining about it do? Bad behavior to accept the things I cannot change? OR sanity? Good luck with your choice. Let's look back in 2 more years and see if anything has changed yet.

Look at history, both here on BGA and in the IRL world. Many times it doesn't help. But sometimes it does. So then it is woth all the other times.

Both you both have points and not. Complaining is usually not a good way to create change. Coming with constructive critisism or doing it yourself is better. "within my control", everything is in some way even if it feels distant. But I understand what you mean and if you want to focus on that it is of course okey. But some have "bigger thoughts". That is okey too.

What I am mainly reacting on in your previous comment is "find somewhere else to play". With your latest comment I understand you don't mean it in the same way many others do. Most times it is used to get away with being lazy, master suppression technique, getting rid of people that can make a good difference for the masses but not some rich individuals and so on.

So I am thinking about a broader perspective than just this case. It seems you didn't mean to be toxic. But that can often be or be interpreted as toxic. Loosing people that can be of good use and their motivation to actually help and make a difference.

With that comment you may make someone that might have become a developer on the sight loose their motivation to even try and become that. So then that person goes somewhere else and develops there instead.
